This week we introduced the letter Tt. We set out a provocation on the table during drop off in the morning. At one center we left out items that started with the letter Tt. The children were drawn to that center and began drawing the items that start with the letter Tt. Some drew a tiger, tooth, turtle, toothpaste and a toilet. These will go up on the front wall where our alphabet hangs. After morning centers, we gathered the children on the rug to formally introduce the letter. We went over the formation of the letter as well as the sound, with both our zoo phonics and our jolly jingles. The children’s favorite part of learning the new letter is when they guess the pictures we show them. We give them clues and they guess what it would be, just by knowing the letter that week. We then put these pictures on the board to reference all week. We love watching the children reference the board when talking about the letter and the sound. This week we have heard a lot of talk with the letter. One child said, “There are so many letters that begin with the letter Tt.” We set out the trays with sand and gems for the children to practice their letters before writing them onto paper. We set out the letter we introduced last week and the one from this week. The children have enjoyed sitting at these trays and enjoy forming the letter these ways. The children have been enjoying playing board games in the afternoon. They are interested in the rules and how the game works. They are learning to take turns and have patience. The game, “Cootie,” has been a big hit. The children are working with their hands to put the pieces of the bug together all by themselves, and they are proud of doing it without asking for help. Uno is also a fun game the children have been playing. This is helpful for number recognition and matching the color too. Turning over the cards is a nice easy way to strengthen their small muscles to help with prewriting. Jenga is another game they have been taking out at the end of the day. They stack the blocks and then they take turns pushing and pulling a piece out to add to the top without having the whole tower fall over. They are taking their time with this game and it is nice to see they have the patience and excitement for each turn. We read the book Tessa Tiger’s Temper Tantrum. There were a lot of words in this book that started with the letter Tt. They loved recalling the words that began with Tt. They were also asked questions at the end of the story to recall some details from the story. The children added to their literacy book by writing a word that starts with the letter Tt. Some of the pages were: turtle, tortoise, television, truck, tree, and telephone. They are looking at the word a teacher wrote and copying it below. They then add a picture to go with it and we add it to their book. If you would like to come look at the books, they are on the wall hanging in Room 2. The children can access them as well. PE was a lot of fun this week. The children learned a game last week and they got to use different locomotor skills this week to grab bean bags of a different color hula hoop and bring it back to their home hula hoop. Each morning on the carpet we put down things that started with the letter Tt. Telephones, train puzzle, trapezoids and triangles. It took only a couple days for some of the children to tell us that they have noticed the things put on the rug start with the letter Tt. This got them excited to explore more things around the room that started with Tt. Our emergent curriculum in TK has stemmed off to be a couple of different things. The children have been interested in catapults, books, board games and their ice cream police station. Starting after the Thanksgiving holiday, we will be breaking the class up into small groups to explore these topics deeper. They will get to choose one or two they are interested in and dive deeper into the process and information these concepts have to offer. If any of you have an expertise in any of these areas, we would love for you to share your knowledge with the class and come volunteer during this small group time. Please let us know!
