The school looks extra beautiful this week with all the sukkot around. The children have noticed that there are many sukkot around the school and they have started discussions on what they are built out of and how they have gone to some outside of school as well. We began the week inviting Room 1 into our class to learn deeper about the holiday and what it has to offer. We read the book, Sky-High Sukkah. They enjoyed listening to the story that was about community (in Hebrew Kehilah). The whole community got together to help two kids to store pieces of the sukkah, carry the pieces up to the roof, decorate it and enjoy the mitzvah of eating under it. Our children were then able to share stories of their own about their visits to a sukkah.
A few children went to find flowers around our school that looked different from one another. They found 4 they wanted to keep. When we got back down to the classroom, we set the 4 different flowers on a poster board. A few children sat around and started talking about the flowers and the ants crawling off of it. We sat down as a whole group on the rug and put out the flowers taped to a board. We showed the Details icon and asked the children what they saw. We talked about the word “adjective” which is a describing word. This then got the children to think of words they can use to describe the flowers. “They have petals.” “One is white.” “I see a stem.” “There’s leaves on it.” “This is green and pink.” “The leaf is green and sticking out.” “The color is purple and green.” “The flower is pink, and it is green.” “It’s yellow and green.” “I see the leaves have lines on them.” “It is soft.” “They are all pretty.” “It feels soft and some of them are dry.” The next day we put out magnifying glasses on the table with the Details icon and wood pieces. We noticed the children using the magnifying glasses and using the word ‘details’ when describing both the wood pieces. Here is what some of them said: “I see some round circles on the flat part.” “I see tiny circles.” “It feels like a big rock or boulder.” After they described some of the wood pieces, we later did the same with a lulav and etrog. “There is a piece sticking out of the etrog.” “It is sharp on the end.” “It has sharp leaves.” “It is green and it is yellow.” “The etrog is bumpy and a little soft.” “The leaves on the lulav are long.” We enjoyed visiting the sukkah with Rabbi Josh. He talked to the children about the mitzvah of shaking the lulav and etrog and how we shake it all around us. Each child got to hold and shake the ritual objects inside the sukkah. We ate snack together and sang some songs. Our children have been enjoying building with blocks and discovering the different ways to use them. We transformed this learning deeper into making these blocks into structures used to “fling” items across the room. We have been coming back to this discovery every week. We put out popsicle sticks, rubber banks and bottle caps with pictures of various catapults. The children enjoyed exploring these materials and figuring out how these new materials work the same as or differently from the blocks they were using previously.
