The weather is turning cooler and we celebrated with soup. The little chefs in the class chopped the carrots, celery, garlic. They measured the water, the brown sugar and milk. We poured all the ingredients and followed a recipe. We made yummy Butternut Squash soup. After lunch we all enjoyed a delicious treat of warm comfort food.
The EC gathered together in Plotkin Chapel to celebrate Havdalah. What a wonderful and spiritual way to end the weekend/Shabbat and welcome the new week as a community. There is a feeling of joy when watching the children in room 2 put their arms around each other's backs and sway side to side singing the prayers. We have a very special group in room 2. We have been speaking about Thanksgiving and the different crops the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims to plant. We also have been discussing how they also taught the new arrivals to America the importance of not wasting all parts of the crops and animals that they use for food. i.e., making dolls from corn husk. We all took turns shucking the ears of corn and brushing off the corn silk. We saved the husks and silk to make dolls. After circle time we enjoyed the sweet corn, crunching and munching from the cob. Wednesday, we started the day with a birthday celebration. Happy 5th Birthday Liam. The children were treated to a very special chocolate cake, baked by Liam’s aunt. The cake is a tradition of Liam’s mom and aunt. They had the same cake every year in Israel at school. It is so special to carry on family traditions to the next generation. Liam’s mom joined us at the library later in the morning. We really love to go and read together and on our own. During circle time Wednesday morning, Dior left a gap between herself and the child next to her. When we asked why she left this space she answered with, “That is where Aitana will sit.” How lovely to keep Aitana in our hearts until she comes back the end of this month. On Monday we sent her a video to say hello. Her mom answered back that this was so special and Aitana was excited by the video. All the children are very curious about where Aitana is and where Australia is located. Room 1 lent us their globe, giving our children a visual understanding of the earth. The children were excited looking and talking about what they see on the globe. Some of the observations included answers such as: The earth has so much blue because it is full of sky It is water and oceans The earth is full of hills It takes an airplane to get to Australia It could take 100 steps to get there Australia has different animals than we have here. Surprising to the teachers the children immediately talked about Kangaroos and Koala Bears. Their understanding and knowledge of these animals was fascinating. The children brought up penguins, taking our discussion to another continent. Watching your children listening intently and discussing these “Big Ideas” about travel and our earth is all steps in our, “Wise Learning Process”. If you have any questions about the “Wise Learning Process” we are excited to talk to you. We have started to work on our Dream Catchers using grapevine wreaths and yarn. The children equated the look of the Dream Catchers to a spider web. Our discussions turned to how the spider catches bugs in the web to eat and their bad dreams get caught in the web keeping them locked away. The yarn needs to be wrapped around the wreath, helping with the children’s ability to follow directions and learning directional movement. I.e. up, down, side to side. The next step to the dream catchers will be to hang beads and feathers from the bottom of the wreath. Look at those beads when they come home. See if you can notice the pattern your child has made. We have been working very hard on our understanding of a pattern. Patterns are a wonderful beginning to math, learning about order and counting in all parts of our lives. This week Rabbi Josh visited room 9 and us for STorah time. We have been taking turns hosting each other in the classroom. This week we talked about Isaac and Rebecca. Rabbi Josh spoke about welcoming strangers into your home and how to be a good friend to everyone. We told him about how we are good friends and what we do on Shabbat to welcome everyone to our home and where we sometimes go for Shabbat. Doobie the Shabbat Bear went to Mexico for a long weekend with Liam and his family. We got to hear all about his adventure. This year for Thanksgiving we will be cooking a side dish to share with all the Pre-K classes at our Friendship Feast. To keep with the theme of giving thanks, we ask our parents and children to donate a can of food for the children to give to a special Thanksgiving Sova drive. Our room 2 chefs will be making Cranberry Sauce. Shabbat is here, this week Noah is our Shabbat Yeled, Noah’s birthday was this week also. Two birthdays in one week. Wow are we lucky. We had a very special treat of birthday cake and goodies. Thank you to Noah and his family for joining us. We are looking forward to Doobie’s adventures at Noah’s house.
