We enjoyed our time at music this week learning new Hanukkah songs and singing ones we knew from before. The children enjoyed learning the dreidel song in Hebrew! We have been singing in the classroom too and the children are getting excited for Hanukkah.
We have been reading a lot of books with the theme of Hanukkah. Latke, the Lucky Dogwas a huge hit. The children enjoyed listening to the story of a dog that got adopted for Hanukkah and they named it Latke. It was interesting to see what the dog got into and how lucky it felt that it got adopted during Hanukkah and to such a loving family. We read Runaway Dreidel. This book captivated their listening because the dreidel spun around to many places on an adventure. They enjoyed listening about the dreidel spin to the next place, even over the ocean and up to the sky and up in the planets! One of the children said, “Hey, the dreidel can’t do that!” The children shared where they wanted the dreidel to go next. After reading the book Runaway Dreidel, the children were captivated by the journey that the dreidel went on when it spun out of the house. We asked the children if they spun a dreidel, where would it go? Some said, “My dreidel is going far away to a different house.” “My dreidel ran off to Israel and it went into a house.” “My dreidel spun all around the world.” “My dreidel ran away to Chloe and Joya’s house!” “My dreidel ran away to space.” “It is going to fly in the air to my house.” When the children walked in the next morning, one offering was to spin dreidels dipped in paint and see what the outcome would be. The children were fascinated as they watched the dreidels spin around the paper while painting at the same time. The best was that each piece looks different. This week we are working on recognizing and writing the letter Hh. The children noticed right away when they walked in that the new letter was Hh. We played our guessing game with clues to see what words begin with the letter Hh. “We wear this on our head.” Hat! “People live in these.” House! This is an animal that sometimes people ride.” Horse! “This is an animal we can keep inside our homes.” Honey badger! This one was more difficult for them to guess. It was a Hamster. Ever since we brought out the easel last week to show a word that started with the letter Ee, the children have wanted to paint all the time. Moving the painting tool from the paint container to the easel surface requires focus and control. This also focuses on large motor using the angle of the arm, using the easel works the shoulder and entire arm.
