The week started off with a heavy rain, but that didn’t stop us from coming in excited to begin Fathers and Grandfathers week. We welcomed Taylor and Leo’s dads to PE, where they joined us in a game of Full Touch Kick Ball. We all showed off our eye hand coordination, running and throwing skills. The dads left with smiles from ear to ear.
Our room has begun using reusable plastic plates, utensils and cups. We are learning about not wasting and trying to decrease the use of paper and plastic in our classroom. The children are very excited to wash the dishes after snack. They check in to make sure that they are using the dish soap on the sponge and not the hand soap and they are monitoring each other on how long the water is running. It is wonderful to see how conscientious the children are and that they are taking responsibility for their world around them. You can ask them to help at home with the dishes too. We are sure they will be happy volunteers. We have been adding words like author, illustrator and cartographer to our ever-growing vocabulary. This week the class was introduced to the book, “The Book With No Pictures”, by B.J. Novack. We all laughed at all the silly words that were used and the funny faces the teachers made when reading out loud. Since we have been looking at Maps and the Globe beginning early in the year, we are now beginning to work on creating our own maps. Introducing the word Cartographer, some of the children have added that job to their ever-growing resume as they have drawn maps of Room 2. It is eye-opening to see the details through their eyes and see all that they see around them. We will expand this experience as we begin to talk more about their homes, neighborhoods and school. We hope to build a 3-D map after Spring Break. It will be up to the children as to what the map will include. They have already expressed an interest in a book to accompany the map. Along with Mapping out the classroom we introduced a new STEM Toy/Activity. The pieces work together to build a Playground. It was a challenge for children and teachers as we worked together trying to find the correct pieces, putting them together and working carefully so as not to go over anyone else's completed tasks. With rain comes cabin fever, especially for children raised in Southern California. Thank goodness we have the Yoga Studio Space adjacent to Katz Pavillion. It helps us burn off energy when we are stuck inside with no yard time. The children played Hot Potato and Musical Chairs and Duck, Duck Goose in the studio. We also measured ourselves, look at the pictures of us on the red mat. On Wednesday we welcomed Aitana back from Morocco and our new friend, Malikai, to Room 2. All the children are playing together and helping to make the transitions smooth. For them it is another way to take care of our classroom family. Continuing our special week, Anderson’s father and Liam’s grandfather joined us for Music with Maestro on Wednesday. We know by their smiling faces that they enjoyed the special time together. Anja’s mom was our Library reader on Wednesday. She and Anja picked out, “The Duckling Gets a Cookie,”by Mo Willems. We hadn’t been to the Library in a while and it was fun to be back and read new books. S’Torah time with Rabbi Josh taught us about building scared space. We learned that you can make a sacred space anywhere and that it is our job to make a place special. Our classroom is a sacred space that we have created as a family. This may be Father and Grandfathers week, and we welcomed our visitors, but we welcome all our families to our sacred space always and want each of you to feel warm and taken care of when you enter our room. Shabbat was filled with so much joy this week. We baked, shared our time with our visitors and joined them in the sanctuary to create an extra special, “Sacred Space.” Thank you for making this a joyous week. Shabbat Shalom, Fern and Ren
