Dear Parents,
It's been a very busy week as the children learned more about Israel and prepared for Yom Ha' atzmaut. We spent some time learning about the Western Wall, and we re-created it through art and building blocks. The children learned that the Western Wall in Jerusalem is one of the holiest places to make a wish for Jewish people. Millions of people visit the Western Wall every year and write their innermost desires, prayers, and wishes on a piece of paper and place it in the stones of the wall. The children were quite fascinated by this, so we took the opportunity to make our own wishes and write them on a piece of paper with a small picture. Next, the children walked up to the wall, said their wish out loud, rolled up their paper and put it in the stones they created. This was a special, heartfelt moment. On Thursday we celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut by bringing a touch of Israel to school. With Israeli flags, food, dancing, and visiting The Shuk, an indoor marketplace, the children reaped the sights, tastes, and sounds of Israel. They were each given Shekels, Israeli money, and had the opportunity to walk around and buy different foods. This was a great time to expose the children to money and its purpose in a fun way. We had a class discussion about money and what we use it for, food, clothing, toys, charity, etc. We ended the day in the classroom decorating a cake and singing happy birthday to Israel. On Friday we celebrated Shabbat in the classroom and paraded the Temple with flags that the children made. Thank you to the Sherf family for joining us and making the day more memorable.
