Dear Parents,
Welcome back!! It was so nice to see the children Monday morning ready and eager to start their day. We had a very chatty circle time as the children shared their stories of Spring Break and Passover. What a great way to start the week, talking about Israel and the holiday Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day. Trying to talk about Israel to children who are only vaguely aware of their own country, or even the concept of what a country might be, can sometimes be tricky. We talked about the country of Israel, the people, culture, holidays, languages, and the different Jewish values. We began by showing the children different pictures, a map of Israel, Israeli foods, money, the flag, and The Western Wall. This started some wonderful conversation and the children were intrigued in learning more. They were most eager to learn about the "Kotel," The Western Wall that once surrounded the Holy Temple. The children asked if we could make our own Western Wall for the classroom, such a clever idea. We took small boxes, square sponges, and different shades of brown paint, and created our own Kotel. We even added some moss to give the wall a more authentic look. Next week we will explore more about Israel and its' customs. The children were quite impressed by the size of the wall, which initiated a conversation about Height vs. Length. We found out that the wall is 488 meters long and 40 meters high. To better explain the concept, the children took rulers and measured different things, their height being the first. They compared with their friends how tall they were, measured each other, and displayed their height with a string on the wall. This was a fun, visual, mathematical activity that the children could really be a part of. A nice way to end the week is celebrating Shabbat all together. We enjoyed Hallah, sang songs, and read some nice Shabbat stories. Just a reminder, it's imperative that you are on time the day of the Pre-K Celebration. Drop off is at 9am, and start time is 9:30. We hope you all made it home safely today!
