Dear Parents,
Fall is here and we have so many things planned for the children. We started one of our favorite lessons this week, "Patterns." Patterns are arrangements of things that repeat in a logical way. Those arrangements of color, shapes, gestures, sounds, images, and numbers are a crucial concept for young children and contribute to their early math skills. Patterns help children learn to make predictions, to understand what comes next, to make logical connections, and to use reasoning skills. At this age the children are becoming aware of two types of patterns, repeating patterns (red-blue-red-blue) and growing patterns (small, medium, large). We began by giving the children different objects to create their own pattern, such as Legos, colored wood cubes, magnets, and colored links. They used their imagination to carefully create their pattern. It’s always important after the children complete their pattern to give them the opportunity to "read" their pattern when it's complete. This will allow them the ability to fix any misplaced objects. During small group time the children chose different collage items, buttons, gems, and colored wood. They first created their design and then with a paintbrush and glue, the children glued the pieces on paper to create their pattern. Next, they read back their pattern to confirm all the pieces were correctly placed. The next day we continued with an art project, "A Pattern Tree." The children were given a piece of clay for the base and wood skewers for the trees. They pounded and molded their base and then stuck the skewers in the clay. They had available to them different colored cut straws. First, they started off thinking and planning their design. How many colors were they going to use? What was their pattern going to look like? As they began creating and thinking critically, they were able to explore their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for their design. Through active learning, they were involved and had to pay attention. This activity required great focus and the children took their time doing it. In the end, they enjoyed achieving their results and what they set out to do. During circle time we read the book, "A Circle of Smiles," By Sylvia Rouss. We discussed with the children about the Beit Issie Foundation and how our support helps the children with special needs. The children enjoyed going to Farmers Market, eating yummy fruit and knowing that their money is going to a good cause. The children went to the Temple for Shabbat and enjoyed the day all together. Please remember to sign your child IN/OUT every day, we have a lot of missing signatures, and it is a matter of state licensing laws. Also, please check your child's cubby daily. There are notices that go home, art projects, water bottles, and clothing being left behind for long periods of time. Thank you for your understanding.
