Dear Parents, It has been a busy and celebratory week here in the EC. On Monday, we joined with Room 9 and visited the Sukkah. What a wonderful experience for the children as they sat in the Sukkah with Rabbi Josh and Maestro, sang songs, learned the blessings and enjoyed a snack all together. In the classroom we continued to talk about Sukkot, which gave the children the opportunity to ask questions and engage in informative dialogue. During small group time the children worked on their journals. At the table they built a Sukkah with blocks and put palm leaves on for the roof. When drawing their picture, we asked them to look at what they built and make their own Sukkah. The children were very creative by using different art mediums and using their imaginations to draw things in the Sukkah. Some drew tables, chairs, food, and colorfully decorated pieces of fruit hanging from the Sukkah. Drawing is not just fun, it's an art that needs concentration and the right methods. If you've ever watched your child draw, you can tell by the look on their face that not only are they having fun, but they are also devoting their entire focus to the drawing, to their work. Children can end up learning a lot about art itself through drawing. They learn the way different colors go together and how they look on paper. They learn to pick apart the colors that are out of place in a certain scene and go with the ones that are in harmony. The creative rewards of being able to tell a story with drawing are invaluable. "A picture is worth a thousand words." We ended the week talking about another Jewish holiday, Simchat Torah. It is a holiday that celebrates the love of the Torah. The children were able to look at different Torahs and gain a better understanding of what's inside. They made their own flags and traced and colored different Jewish symbols on it. When going to the Temple for Shabbat, we celebrated Simchat Torah by taking the Torah scrolls out of the ark and singing, parading, and waving our flags. A festive day for all. We thank the Sherf family for joining us on Shabbat, it made the day more memorable.
