The smell of Pumpkin Bread warmed the room on Tuesday. The children were asked to bake a special treat for the EC tour. They were very excited to make the special treat to welcome our guests. We started baking with a real Sugar Pie Pumpkin, (even though we really used canned pumpkin). After splitting the pumpkin in half, we passed around the open pumpkin to make observations and discuss the details of how it looked, felt and smelled. The children gave their ideas on how we should remove the seeds from the center. We could use our hands or a spoon. Then it was time to decide what to do with the seeds. Some of the children want to plant them and others want to eat them. We are drying them out to roast them. Maybe we can save a few for our new Pre-K garden. It was time to decide how to cook the pumpkin to make it mushy like the canned. It is interesting how many of the children said to Microwave it. When we talked about not having a Microwave in class, they were stumped. After a little prompting we all decided to put the pumpkin in a pot of water and boil until tender.
Finally, it was baking time. With recipe in front of us we measured, cracked eggs, poured all the ingredients into a large bowl. Lots of muscles helped to mix all the ingredients together. After it was baked, Teacher Fern noticed the color was not ask dark and rich as it should have been. When we tasted it, Oops, we forgot the sugar. There were some disappointed faces and words like yucky and I don’t really like it when we tasted the Pumpkin Bread. We have begun emptying out the sandbox on our patio. Hard work ahead of us. The children were tired, hungry and ready for lunch after working on this project. We have a lot of days ahead of us. The children have begun signing themselves in every morning and rarely need to be reminded. They are very proud of their ability to find their own names and write on the children’s sign in. We have also begun to talk about how to form letters using directions like vertical, horizontal, diagonal and top to bottom. Tracing with stencils has also become a favorite activity during quiet time after lunch. Thanksgiving may be a month away and that can feel like forever to a 4/5-year-old but, we have started to talk about the foods and things we are thankful for. We have tied those feeling into the High Holidays that just passed. As the weeks pass, we will also be cooking a lot of foods in our class that represent the holiday and compare different tastes. Some of the children have already begun to make faces at trying new foods, however we are encouraging all of them to try a little of everything before saying no thank you. Room 1 came to visit, and we read the book, “Circle of Smiles”. The book talks about, “Beit Issie”, the school in Israel that we donate our Tzedakah money to. We spoke about how the school assists and teaches children with different needs. It is wonderful to hear from you children how important it is to take care of others and help the world around us. Shabbat is here and this week we visited the Beit Issie Farmers market. Thank you to Leo’s mom for bring us fruit from the Farmers Market and Chocolate Pudding for our Shabbat Snack. Instead of purchasing fruit at the market Room 2 children were able to use our Tzedakah money to get little gifts to help raise money for an important cause. Our class has been bringing in Tzedakah money on a regular basis each week for Shabbat and we had so many coins and dollar bills we had $50 to give. Thank you all for helping the children understand the meaning of Tzedakah. Shabbat Shalom, Ren and Fern Reminders: Sign up for Parent Conferences.
