This week we started off by strengthening our cutting skills. The letter this week is“Pp”. We took a close-up picture of every child’s face, and drew lines on the back to make a puzzle. The children then cut on the lines and put it aside to put together during centers throughout the week. They enjoyed seeing their faces on the cards, and thought it was funny that they were cutting through pieces of their face! They enjoyed putting their puzzle together as well as figuring out their friend’s faces.
The children are continuing to talk about planting, throughout our school days. Every time a child has something in their lunch that has seeds, they take it to dry out so they can plant it. They are having meaningful conversations about how each seed needs to be planted in different ways. We had avocados for snack one day and the children asked a lot of questions about how to plant the big pit in the middle. We walked the children over to our containers on the shelf in room 2 that we planted just before TuBish’Vat. They were talking to each other about how the plants have all grown down, sideways and up! A few children noticed that the garlic looks like the green onion when it grows. “Look how tall and straight that is.” “The potato seems to be growing a bitslow.” “Will the avocado pit grow that slow too?” In the studio this week the Ice Cream/Police station group got to work making bowls and spoons out of clay. They have made some in the past, but now they are working towards keeping them for the purpose of our project. They even decided they wanted to make something that looked like an ice cream cone so people would know what we are selling there. The children gravitate to the clay area the second we walk into the studio. Their attention to detail and purpose is expanding by the week. Some sit with the clay the entire hour we are there, just on one thing that they are smoothing out, attaching other pieces to and making into the perfect shape they visualize. We enjoy going, and we can’t wait to go back. We had a nice conversation about Generation’s Day. Next Friday, we will greetour guests at school and enjoy a nice tikkun olam project together. We read the letter aloud to the children that we sent home in their backpacks on Wednesday. They didn’thave as many questions as they had information and excitement. We talked about the value of welcoming guests and that they are able to bring that guest into our classroom and make cards for people less fortunate than ourselves. The children went on to discuss that they will see what they have at home to bring or go to the store and get these items with their family. Their excitement behind these ideas was amazing to listen to. Their drive behind it all came from the heart. We look forward to collecting these items, making cards and continuing these meaningful conversations.
