Tu Bish’vat was a big hit in Room 3. The children have been learning about trees and how they look during each changing season. We enjoyed meaningful conversations about what trees give us. The children talked with one another about how lovely it is outside when the sun is shining bright and they can sit under a tall tree and use its’ shade, and they talked about all the fruits trees give us. On Monday we enjoyed a nice snack of apples and dried apples, bananas and banana chips as well as grapes. We took part in a Tu Bish’vat seder and talked about all kinds of fruits we enjoy not only during Tu Bish’vat, but throughout the year. The children took part in mixing white grape juice and red grape juice together to show the difference in color when mixed, that represents the four seasons. We loved taking walks around the school and observing the trees and the amount of force the wind was providing on Monday.
We introduced the letter “Jj”. We explained that when we write the letter “Jj” we use a little line and a little curve, and the children practiced with the wood pieces. We practiced the sound the letter “Jj” makes, and then the children moved like jellyfish and made the “Jj” sound. One child asked if we could play the jolly jingle for the letter “Jj”. A few weeks ago, some children asked Emmie to make them bracelets and necklaces. She and her mom decided to bring the rubber bands used to make them to class, so that all the children can learn how to do it themselves. A discussion arose in class, and the children decided they wanted to make the bracelets and sell them to others. They thought that if they wanted them, they were sure other children would as well. We discussed making them as a class and selling them. The children want to take the money they make and donate it. We will have further discussions on how we can make these, sell them and where they want to donate the money. Listening to their discussions while making these has been interesting. We have noticed some children helping one another and talking about how to pull one rubber band over the other. They are learning how to work in small groups during other projects we are working on. It is nice to see their work in pairs. Helping one another gives them more confidence and self-awareness to ask for help and take help when needed. During lunchtime on Wednesday, one table in particular had a meaningful conversation. One child said, “Hey, I really enjoyed when we learned about the fruits that have seeds you can eat, the fruit you can eat the skin from and the ones that have pits you can’t eat. Can we learn a little more about that?” This got everyone talking. We looked around the table at what everyone was eating. “I have an apple and I can eat the skin, but I can’t eat the seeds.” “I have a yellow pepper; I can eat the skin, but I want to take the seeds out and plant them here with everyone!” “Can I have some seeds to plant too?” “Ya, let’s share them and see what will grow.” “I have one seed left from my watermelon slice; can we plant that with the pepper seeds too?” The next day we put out a bin of soil. The children were excited to plant the seeds they had set aside the day before. They talked about how maybe in a day or two we will see roots and sprouts. Some said it might take a few weeks to see anything. Others said maybe a few months, or even when they are too old to even be at this school anymore.
