Thank you all for coming to our classroom to celebrate Hanukkah. We enjoyed singing and eating together to celebrate the upcoming holiday. Everyone enjoyed listening to the Hanukkah story before we lit the candles together and sang the blessings. It was nice to hear the children recite the blessings they have been working hard on. We hope you all have a nice holiday with your family and friends.
We learned to play the dreidel game. The children have been asking how to play the game and they have also been telling us how they want us to watch how good they are at spinning! We enjoyed the game because we got to learn some math skills as well as develop those small muscles in our hands while spinning. They learned how to take half of the pile of winnings, adding one to the pot, and taking it all and then counting what they had in their own piles. We challenged them to count by 2s if they could. We enjoyed watching them as they spun their dreidels better each time. We set out a provocation of a glass lamp, oil and a glass jar. We waited for the children to come to the table to have their own discussion. Some children said, “That is an oil lamp.” “You can burn that.” “I have one like that.” “My mommy has one like that, it looks like a teapot.” “I see a string.” The oil that goes in there will be sucked up.” “It looks like a machine that will suck up all the oil.” We then brought the group together and they started a conversation about oil. They decided once we lit the wick that the oil was sucking it all up and it looks like a night light. Some thought the flame would go away. Some thought it would last all day because the oil sucked it all up. They noticed before we left for the day it was still burning. They said that if it was a candle it would have burned out already. They noticed the wick sucked up the oil to keep it burning. We had a conversation about the battle with the Maccabees. We talked about how the Syrian army did not want the Jews to practice their religion. They were fighting for what they believed in. We posed the question: What makes someone a Hero? This is what the children said: “When someone is brave.” “When someone transforms.” “A hero saves the day.” “To wear a costume.” “They team up.” “They grow up and then they become a hero.” “They can fly.” “They can fight.” “Saving lives.” Another question we asked was: What are some different ways to show courage? Here is what some of them said: “You don’t give up.” The last question we asked was: How is a hero brave or courageous? “They didn’t give up. We introduced the letter Oo. The children enjoyed this letter because it has two sounds. They started yelling out words that began with the letter Oo when they got excited. “Olive!” “Octopus!” “On!” “Off!” Shabbat Shalom, Rachel and Linda Reminders: - Winter Break December 23rd- January 3rd.
