First graders started an adventure using PIXIE by Tech4Learning on our iPads. PIXIE is a versatile app that has features for drawing, writing, creating slideshows and more.
One of the special features allows student to create comic books. Each student starts a project with 6 pages that tell their comic book story, adding images and speech bubbles along the way. Finished comic books feature all six images on one page. Here is an example: During an incredibly busy Hanukkah week, we have been spending an hour in each classroom participating in Hour of Code. Using the hourofcode.com, Scratch, Code.Org, Khan Academy and Tynker we have learned to code using blocks and JavaScript.

Children in grade K-6 can participate in one of three workshops and family and friends can enjoy a wonderful day at Legoland. For more information and to purchase tickets: http://mycart.wisela.org/robo-wildcats/ Students in kindergarten and first grade have been using Scratch Jr. to create original stories while learning to program at the same time. Students use blocks of code to start, move, and resize avatars known as sprites in Scratch lingo. Additional programming blocks are used to switch backgrounds. Sandbox activities that are part of the program including a drawing zone to edit the appearance of sprites and backgrounds. Students in first grade learned more advanced programming techniques such as looping. (Scratch Jr. can be downloaded to you iPad for free from the App Store.)
Second and third grade students are the newest members of the Wise School Typing Club. Each student is assigned a username and password that allows them to enter the web portal where they will find straightforward, no frills keyboarding lessons. |
