We welcomed two new students to first grade this week, room 65 welcome's Bill Ke, and room 66 welcomes Yaroslav Milakin!
Reading In reading this week we learned about visualization. We learned that we visualize to create a mental movie in our head as we read. Our thinking stems for this unit are "I'm picturing...", "I'm imagining...", and "I can (see, taste, hear, smell, feel)". Phonics In phonics this week our focus was long "e" and we discussed that "ee" and "ea" make the long e sound. We also focused on r blends, such as crab. We then sorted real and nonsense words. Math In math this week we focused on standard and non standard measurements. For non standard measurement, we measure with meatballs...ask you student how many meatballs their feet are! Hebrew/Judaic Studies In Hebrew and Judaic studies this week we learned about the letter tet to incorporate our unit on Tu B'Shevat. In Hebrew we read and made stories about Tu B'Shevat. We dedicated trees in our writing and talked about nature. Homework Homework should not take your child more than 10 or 15 minutes. This should not include reading, which should be a separate 10 minutes every night. After your child has finished reading (with you, or by him or herself), please sign your initials on their reading calendar. In addition, please practice the weekly spelling words every night with your child.
