Writer's Workshop
In writing this week we began our next unit on opinion writing. We discussed the difference between facts and opinions. Resident Expert This week we began our resident expert boards. We brainstormed topics that we are experts about. We then wrote tips to share with people about our topics. Ask you child what they are an expert in! Phonics In phonics this week we continued with long "O" and we discussed that "oa","ow", and "o_e" make the long o sound. Our spelling pattern focused on "l" blends. Math In math this week we focused on graphing. We compiled a class list of birthdays and then made a tally chart. We took our tally chart and made a class picture graph of our birthdays. On our graph we focused on elements of a graph including title, key, data, and categories. Hebrew/Judaic Studies We learned the letter "tsadee" and corresponding themes such as tzedakah and tzvaeem (an ongoing color unit). Homework Homework should not take your child more than 10 or 15 minutes. This should not include reading, which should be a separate 10 minutes every night. After your child has finished reading (with you, or by him or herself), please sign your initials on their reading calendar. In addition, please practice the weekly spelling words every night with your child. Reading In reading this week we learned about predictions. A prediction is a good guess about what will happen next in a story. Good readers use text and picture clues to predict! Phonics In phonics this week our focus was long "O" and we discussed that "oa","ow", and "o_e" make the long e sound. We also focused on l blends, such as plate. Our l blends test will be next Frida, January 29th. Math In math this week we focused on weight. We used balances in class to weigh various objects. We discussed vocabulary words such as heavy, heavier, light, and lighter. Hebrew/Judaic Studies In Hebrew we read and made stories about Tu B'Shevat. We dedicated trees in our writing and talked about nature. Homework Homework should not take your child more than 10 or 15 minutes. This should not include reading, which should be a separate 10 minutes every night. Reading In reading this week we learned about visualization. We learned that we visualize to create a mental movie in our head as we read. Our thinking stems for this unit are "I'm picturing...", "I'm imagining...", and "I can (see, taste, hear, smell, feel)". Phonics In phonics this week our focus was long "e" and we discussed that "ee" and "ea" make the long e sound. We also focused on r blends, such as crab. We then sorted real and nonsense words. Math In math this week we focused on standard and non standard measurements. For non standard measurement, we measure with meatballs...ask you student how many meatballs their feet are! Hebrew/Judaic Studies In Hebrew and Judaic studies this week we learned about the letter tet to incorporate our unit on Tu B'Shevat. In Hebrew we read and made stories about Tu B'Shevat. We dedicated trees in our writing and talked about nature. Homework Homework should not take your child more than 10 or 15 minutes. We discussed how to use doubles, how to group by 10's, and adding 10's and 1's. Hebrew/Judaic Studies In Hebrew and Judaic studies this week we started making individual Torah's for the story of Exodus. This will be an ongoing project for the second semester.
