We have so many wonderful events coming up and we want you to know all about them! Tu B'Shvat Field Trip - Feb. 4thThis coming Wednesday our whole school will be traveling to Camp Alonim for our annual Tu B'Shvat field trip. Please make sure your children are at school by 7:30 AM on Wednesday. They do not need backpacks or lunch this day. Please remember tennis shoes and a water bottle though! Family Shabbat Dinner - Feb. 6thJoin us this Friday for a beautiful Shabbat service with presentations by your Second Grader! Singapore Math - Building an understanding of the curriculum, instruction and research - Feb. 17Are you ready to do some math? Join Karen Anderson and Ashley VanNoppen at 8:15 in the Project Studio room to explore the concrete-pictorial-abstract methodology and to gain udnerstanding of the foundations and key components of Singapore Math. They promise to challenge you!
In Project Studio we learned a little bit about elections and different terms that have to do with campaigns, elections, and voting. In P.E. we practiced soccer drills like dribbling and passing the ball. In Music we rehearsed for our presentations of Peter and The Wolf and Elvis Presley. Do we use textbooks? While the program does offer a textbook, it is also available online. We all use Smart Board versions of the textbook lessons to create a more interactive class period for the students. Look down the page for more information on how to access some online materials! A typical Singapore Math lessonThe concept behind Singapore Math is that the students start out by learning with CONCRETE materials. They use blocks, cubes, and other hand-held manipulatives to learn a concept. Then we move to PICTORIAL. This means we move away from the hand-held items towards pictures and images. Then we go to ABSTRACT which looks like a "typical" math problem. For example: A story problem may read: Alyssa has 13 teddy bears and 8 of them have a rip in them. How many do not have rips in them? In the concrete, the students would use blocks, cubes, or even math bear counters to show 13, take away 8 and be left with 5. In the pictorial, students would draw a picture (does not need to be bears) and show 13, take away 8, and be left with 5. In the abstract, they would show 13 - 8 = 5. Bar ModelsOne of the fundamental components of Singapore Math starting in Second Grade is visualizing word problems using bar models. Most of the students have begun this process and the rest will be learning about it soon. Here is an example of a bar model problem. Accessing Online MaterialsAll of the children have learned how to go online and access their Singapore Math materials. Here is how you can help them get online at home.
Visit: www-k6.thinkcentral.com Enter in UNITED STATES for Country, CALIFORNIA for State, PRIVATE SCHOOL for District, and STEPHEN S WISE TEMPLE ELEM SCHOOL for School. The user name is your student's First Initial and Last Name (except for Leah Namvar who is lenamvar) Example: JOHN DOE's login would be jdoe The password for everyone is wisemath Once logged in, click on My Library, then click on Virtual Manipulatives Here they will be able to practice all sorts of probelms with a variety of tools. |
