Do we use textbooks? While the program does offer a textbook, it is also available online. We all use Smart Board versions of the textbook lessons to create a more interactive class period for the students. Look down the page for more information on how to access some online materials! A typical Singapore Math lessonThe concept behind Singapore Math is that the students start out by learning with CONCRETE materials. They use blocks, cubes, and other hand-held manipulatives to learn a concept. Then we move to PICTORIAL. This means we move away from the hand-held items towards pictures and images. Then we go to ABSTRACT which looks like a "typical" math problem. For example: A story problem may read: Alyssa has 13 teddy bears and 8 of them have a rip in them. How many do not have rips in them? In the concrete, the students would use blocks, cubes, or even math bear counters to show 13, take away 8 and be left with 5. In the pictorial, students would draw a picture (does not need to be bears) and show 13, take away 8, and be left with 5. In the abstract, they would show 13 - 8 = 5. Bar ModelsOne of the fundamental components of Singapore Math starting in Second Grade is visualizing word problems using bar models. Most of the students have begun this process and the rest will be learning about it soon. Here is an example of a bar model problem. Accessing Online MaterialsAll of the children have learned how to go online and access their Singapore Math materials. Here is how you can help them get online at home.
