This week we spoke about Lag Ba Omer and about being good to our friends. Treating our friends as we would like to be treated "ואהבת לרעך כמוך" . we spoke of the symbols of this special holiday, one of them being a Bond Fire. We built a bond fire from wood blocks and played around it and created one from colored and torn paper. We worked together as a group and all the friends helped one another. We had a picnic with our Explorer neighbors in celebration of the holiday.
We also worked on our Mother’s day project. This week we enjoyed the great California heat and played with water and sand. We are learning songs and reviewing Hebrew letters and numbers. We are reading stories about families and (Eema) Mom in honor of Mother’s Day. We had 2 Birthday boys this week… Happy 4th Birthday to Oliver & Elad.

Our class, with all of our Explorer friends, sung, ate, and danced with Brak. We baked a cake in honor of Israel’s birthday with blue and white. The children cut their very own Israeli salad and ate falafel and Humus with Pita. The children enjoyed every bite! We examined the details of the flag and talked about Israel’s age. We counted up to 67 with different objects so that the children can have a physical grasp of the objects and see the quantity. The children decided that they will go to Israel for the birthday celebration next year…so get ready!
We celebrated Earth Day and the children made fresh juice, used a compost machine, planted fruit and vegetable seeds, and had some Yoga time. We read the story “Are you my Mother” and had a discussion about the book at circle time. This week we spoke about how old Israel will be and the details of the Israel flag. We are learning songs in honor of Israel’s birthday. We spoke about the triangle (meshulash)shape that creates the Magen David on the flag and painted blue Magen David made from popsicle sticks. We also created individual flags of Israel. We discussed Israel’s location in the world and the different cities in Israel. Next week we will be celebrating Israel’s Birthday on Thursday April 23, 2015. They knew all the songs and performed with pride and confidence. We are also very proud of their accomplishments.
We practiced all week long for our Pesach Seder and we played the Afikoman game. The children were so excited to search and find the Afikoman. We also made pizza matzah and the children enjoyed eating a pizza that looked very different than what they are used to. We wish you and your families a Happy Pesach and a wonderful spring vacation. We are getting ready for our upcoming Pesach Seder and learning all the songs. We practiced and spent time with all our Explorer friends. The children are excited to know that their parents will be celebrating with them. This week we built with magnet tiles and blocks and the children are really enjoying working together as a team. We are using scissors on a daily basis and the children are starting to master this skill. Have a wonderful weekend, a meaningful Shabbat and know that we look forward to seeing you all next week for the Pesach Seder. We introduced the characters of the story and the children compared Paroh (Pharoh) to Haman. We are learning songs for Pesach and painted green to create frogs who jump on Paroh and his bed. The children are working with the block and magnet tiles, building Egypt and using small plastic frogs. we painted blue to represent the sea that was miraculously split to allow Bnai Israel to pass through and escape from the hands of the Egyptians. We spoke about Egypt being located in a Meedbar (Desert), near Israel and spoke about Liat’s trip to Israel. The children were happy to have chocolate and cookies from Israel as they requested for Liat’s flight. You can also pick up a form from our school offices. Extended Day forms for the winter session are also available. If your child is currently enrolled in Extended Day and you wish to continue, please sign up for the spring session. Purim is in full swing in Ulpanon Alef. We have been dressing up in costumes and crowns, singing Purim songs and reading Purim stories. We worked on Mishloach Manot that the children will exchange with each other. A HUGE thank you to everyone for contributing an item for the Mishloach Manot baskets. Thank you to Hayli’s mom, Sigalit, and Elad’s mom, Maytal, who came to read to us in the library. We will end the week with a Purim shpiel in the Temple put on by some of the teachers!
REMINDERS: Please save the date for Parent Teacher Conferences which are scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 and Thursday, March 19. Sign ups will be available early next week. School ends at 12 pm on March 18th. Our Passover Seder will be on Wednesday, March 25th at 11 am in Hershenson Hall. We are requesting the company of one adult per child. We made groggers and oznei haman (hamantashen). We had a great time with all the fathers and grandfathers who have come to our classroom this week. We are learning the story of Megillat Esther and the children learned the characters in the story and will be choosing which one they’d like to be: Melech Ahashverosh, Malkat Esther, Vashti, Mordechai and Haman. In addition, they will be decorating crowns to represent the characters they have chosen. We are continuing to review the children’s names on a daily bases and the children are able to recognize their names and their friend’s names. We read Baxter, The Pig Who Wanted to Be Kosher and decided to make fresh pickles with the kids. Ask your child to show you the jar in our room and the ingredients we used inside.
