Students in fourth grade have BIG ideas!!!! In Mrs. Hechtman's reading class, students learned how to formulate big ideas in groups based upon a novel that they had just read. We talked about the general versus the specific and how big ideas need to be able to be generalized to many and varied situations as opposed to just a single situation. Within their groups, students used word cards to spur their thinking and then added some of their own thoughts to generate some pretty thoughtful and sophisticated BIG ideas! Check them out! Upcoming DatesWednesday, 11/26 - Midor L'Dor (Half Day - early dismissal 12:30 pm)
Thursday & Friday, 11/27-11/28 - Thanksgiving Holiday (No School)

In Judaic Studies, the students are working on their Heroes from the Bible and their ancestors that they are inviting as their guests to the Sukkah. This week a different guest from the past called "Ushpizin", is invited to our Sukkah in spirit. They come to help us fulfill the Mitzvah of celebrating Sukkot and being happy. Chag Sameach to you and yours! Looking at Intellectual Intersections in Social StudiesStudents combine multiple prompts of depth and complexity to create intellectual intersections that explore ideas on a deeper level. After listening Mrs. Hechtman read a passage about the First Californians, students responded to the prompt with fascinating details that used details to show change over time within the passage and related it to the beginning of their unit of study about the Native Americans in California. Above is an image that shows the progression of the introductory lesson for the California Native Americans unit. Students used intellectual intersections to first examine how details from the passage show change over time. Next, they analyzed the passage for proof or evidence of natural resources within the text and finally, they examined the idea that the environment is both powerful and a source of power. The fourth graders are exploring the Torah, practicing the prayers before reading the Torah. Upcoming DatesWednesday, 10/22 - Field Trip to the Banning Museum
Thursday, 10/30 - Parent Conferences (Half Day - 12:30 dismissal) Friday, 10/31 - Parent Conferences (Pupil Free) "The value of one thing depends on another" Mrs. Neal's math students explore depth and complexity through big ideas. How can we relate big ideas to math, science, measurement, friends, family and life? See our class chart and student samples and find out! Students in Mrs. Hechtman's reading class explore several Big Ideas as they read the historical fiction novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. While reading, students continuously and independently prove the big ideas with evidence from the text and post their observations on our Idea Wall. This collaborative body of student ideas allows students to learn from one another in a fun and interactive way! Students in Mrs. Hechtman's reading class learned how to ask great unanswered questions by combining the prompts of depth and complexity, key words, and content imperatives by creating intersections between prompts and coupled sets. Students went from asking basic factual questions to asking thoughtful analytic questions in a very short time period! Kol Hakavod! Students in Ms. Spielberg's reading class did a beautiful job displaying what search and rescue dogs do, how they are trained, and how they help their victims. Students in Ms. Spielberg's reading class synthesized the information they learned about search and rescue dogs and presented their learning in a brochure. Upcoming DatesFriday, 10/10 - No School
