We started off our week introducing the letter N. We know it is a short week, so we will continue the letter next week while also introducing the letter M which is very similar. They got to put the wood pieces together to form the letter while also practicing writing it at the art center if they wanted to. We have continued our study on the solar system. We talked a little about Neptune because it starts with the letter N. We will continue the study of Neptune next week and add in the study around the moon as well because it starts with the letter M. The song they are learning about the solar system has helped us learn more in depth about each planet and we can’t wait to research in other ways as well. We were lucky enough to borrow a pair of moon shoes. The kids got to take turns walking with them. They could feel how it would be to walk on the moon. They remembered the book we read last week about the moon and how on earth we have gravity that keeps us grounded, but on the moon there is no gravity. The looks on their faces were incredible to watch as they tried to walk with these on. We were able to ask the kids to make predictions of how it would feel when putting on the moon shoes. This is what some of them predicted: Some kids made predictions that they would fall over with the shoes on. One person said it would be a bigger step in the shoes. They thought it would grip to the moon. One person thought it might be bouncy which starts with the letter B. Each year in the winter, the entire Pre K begins to introduce our Handwriting Without Tears program. In Room 7, we started a couple months ago. Here is a little information about the program more in depth. This award-winning Pre-K curriculum is developmentally appropriate and designed so that all children can thrive and build a strong foundation for kindergarten. This program uses music and movement to engage children and help them develop good learning habits. Children learn actively as they play, color, draw, count, build, and sing. We’ll be teaching your child to: · Develop social-emotional skills to support learning · Build physical coordination, strength, and crayon grip · Recognize letters and numbers · Learn habits for writing capitals and numbers (Start at the top!) · Ask and answer questions · Build vocabulary · More… Your children will learn important readiness, early writing, literacy, and math skills. These potentially complex subjects will be broken down into simpler tasks that develop on what children already know. This way, they can master skills one step at a time as they build lifelong learning habits. We took out the roll a dough to go with the Handwriting Without Tears program and the kids were able to pick a letter they wanted to roll with the dough from the letters we have already learned this year. They enjoyed making a long snake and turning them into letters using big and little lines. We got to make hallah dough again on Friday morning. we mixed the ingredients together and were able to see the rising process with the dough. Usually we do it on Thursday and see the growth when we walk in on Friday morning. They love mixing the ingredients together and being part of the process of making their own hallah from start to finish! I bet it will taste delicious.
