“This is what we need to build a sukkah!” We love singing in Room 7. This song brought us to our feet so that we could experience more in depth and hands on about the holiday of Sukkot. We were able to build using boxes, tape and palm fronds and other various materials. We also got to wrap string around twigs we collected last week to decorate the sukkah outside of our classroom. We were also busy this week making chains to decorate the sukkah so that others can come in and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We worked on our cutting skills and learned the proper way to use a scissor. After we cut the strips we put them together to make a chain and helped hang it from the sukkah. When we went out to hang our decorations from the sukkah, we laid down and looked up at the roof. We made sure we could see the sky peeking at us. We talked about all the mitzvot that come with the holiday of Sukkot. We can sleep, eat, sing, dance and pray in the sukkah.
We got our first visit from Rabbi Josh for the year. He taught us more about the lulav and etrog. He showed us the proper way to shake it and we said the blessing together. We each got a turn to shake the lulav and enjoy some time with Rabbi Josh and other Pre K classes. We started a discussion diving into our learning with the Wise Learning Process. This is just the beginning of our journey to “learn how to learn” using the icons of Depth and Complexity with our partnership with USC Rossier School of Education. We started with the icon of “Details”. We sat with the children in small groups to have them use their five senses to discover details (adjectives) about a lulav and etrog. Using our five senses helps to give in depth details to what we are looking at. “The lulav is squishy.” “I see branches and leaves.” “One leaf is oval.” “The etrog smells like a lemon.” “It feels soft.” “It feels hard.” “It smells so good.” “I notice a little dot.” “I see a green top.” “The etrog has a stem.” “It looks like things that are on the sukkah.” “The bottom of the lulav is light and in a holder.” “The etrog is yellow with green.” “The etrog comes from a tree.” “It gets picked when it’s ready.” As a group we had a discussion looking deeper into the details of our lulav and etrog and they were able to use their sense of touch to hold and shake the lulav and etrog. We created our journal page for Sukkot using an assortment of materials. We glued and put a picture of them shaking the lulav and etrog inside the sukkah. We talked about the shapes we see in the sukkah and the many items that we need to build the sukkah. They remembered from our discussion last week about what we need to build a sukkah.
