Shabbat Shalom, Room 7 Families! This week, we continued our exploration of the upcoming holidays through songs, discussions, investigating a variety shofars, and utilizing different forms of measurement with apples. Last week we introduced to the children exciting news about our “Mystery Reader” who would be joining us the following week. As we talked about it on Monday morning, the children were very curious about who it would be, so as Monday came to a close the children asked questions to investigate who it might be. “Is it a boy or a girl?” “Is it a mommy or daddy?” “What is their favorite color?” Questions filled the room that afternoon and the children could not wait for Tuesday to arrive. Tuesday morning, our “Mystery Reader” opened the door and Ariel jumped up with joy as he ran over to his mom, Rebecca, with such a warm welcome. Rebecca entered the room with three special items: two books about Rosh Hashanah and a very beautiful shofar to share with the class. As Rebecca read to the class, Ariel beamed with happiness. It was such a special treat to have her join us. As the children admired the shofar, they mentioned the many similarities and differences they observed. “Your shofar has silver on it!” remarked one child. Another added, “I haven’t seen a shofar like that before.” During the week the children explored a variety of shofars and noticed that there are many different sizes, shapes, and textures to shofars. “Just like us we are different and shofars are too!” one child shared. “This one feels bumpy!” exclaimed one child. “I like this one because it’s the biggest,” declared another. Along with our visit from Ariel’s mom, Lilly’s mom, Hoda, joined us Thursday morning to make challah dough with the class. Lilly broke into a wide smile as her mother entered the room. The children were so eager to help add in each ingredient and contribute to making our challah dough for Friday. The children gathered around the table, measured ingredients, took turns, and worked together to mix the dough. “This is so much fun!” exclaimed one child. “I can’t wait to do it again,” added another child. It was such a pleasure having Rebecca and Hoda join us this week and we look forward to having other visits from our parents as the year progresses. Vertical Learning This week at the Math Center the children explored different forms of measurement. They worked with apples of different sizes, rulers, two forms of scales, and a tape measure. The children took the initiative to measure different materials around the room. We will further explore this in the coming weeks. At the Art Center we continued with our Shabbat set exploration and had the children design their own kiddush cups with paper and pencil. Next week we will take their designs and use them to create our classroom kiddush cup. We also continued with patterning this week. The children first created their patterns, they drew their pattern with crayons, and lastly used wire to bead their patterns. At the Literacy Center the children used small square tiles to create the lines and curves in the letters of their names. They also utilized the pencils and paper to write or draw special messages for their friends. This week Rabbi Josh told the story of Noah’s ark from the perspective of honoring the bee and its important role in the world to pollinate all of our plants so that we can breathe in fresh air. The children contributed to a lively discussion about the various animals on the ark and shared with Rabbi Josh their experiences with bees. Shanah Tovah! We hope you all have a wonderful time with your families! We wish you all a very healthy and happy New Year!
