What a fun week filled with dress up, baking, celebrations and Purim fun. We started off by taking pictures for picture day. Everyone came dressed nicely and were so good walking around with the photographers taking their pictures. It was exciting to take an all Pre K picture too. We can’t wait to see what they look like.
On Tuesday we came to school dressed up as super heroes. We loved seeing the different costumes everyone came up with. It was incredible to see the characters come out in each of them as they at points came into character. We even got to do some fun Purim yoga dressed up in costume. We began to make our groggers after we explored sound last week. A few kids went down to the Project Studio room in the elementary school and explored all the materials he had in his room. They picked out a few containers that would be perfect for our groggers. After that, each kid came to the table and picked out the one they wanted to use. They decorated it after cutting out strips or pieces of colorful tape and then they were able to fill the inside. After the exploration of sound last week it was interesting to see what the kids wanted to put inside their groggers. It was fun to see who chose something loud while others may have chosen a lot of things but softer materials. After a day of making the dough ourselves and mixing up all the ingredients, we sat down to make the yummy hamantashen. Each kid grabbed a piece of dough and rolled it themselves into a ball. Then, they smashed it down flat. After that they chose what filling to put inside (mostly chocolate chips) and then pinched three corners to make the shape of Haman’s hat. I am not sure who had more fun, the kids or the moms helping! After they were finished baking they got to eat one and then take the other one home. A few kids saw the poster we have had up all year about the similarities and differences between the Torah and a book. They remembered how a Torah has two handles and are scrolls and how the book opens into pages. We were taking about the story of Ester being in what is called a Magilah. A child asked, “What kid of book is the Magilah? Is it like the Torah, or a book?” This became a nice small conversation about how a Magilah is similar to the Torah because it is a scroll with only one way to roll out. They got to see this on Thursday in action when the 6thgraders read a little bit out of the Magilah for us. What a treat! We have been singing a lot of Purim songs and we continued to do so at our all school Purim assembly where we heard Rabbi Josh and Rabbi Sari tell the story of Purim while Teacher Ditza and some teachers sang and acted it out. We loved seeing all the kids dressed up as different characters and seeing how much they could act out with what they remember from the story. It was nice to have small conversations with a few groups of kids about the perspective of the character they had become. We remembered the multiple perspectives that we have been talking about and how each character feels differently about the story.
