Shabbat Shalom, Room 7 Families!
Since the beginning of the school year, the children have shown a keen interest in helping around the classroom. “Can I pass out the string cheese?” offered one child. “I would like to be the line leader,” suggested another. As the weeks have passed, we invited the children to take ownership of their space and daily routine by giving them responsibilities, such as Snack Helper, Morning Meeting Caller, and Door Holder. The children are excited to participate in these roles, and this week, we noticed that keeping track of who does which job is becoming a challenge. We asked the children, “What should we do to remember our responsibilities?” and “How often should we switch jobs?” One child suggested, “Let’s make a list.” Another added, “Why don’t we make a spinning wheel?” The children liked the idea of a spinning wheel, so we explored how it might be made. Together, we discussed a plan. “We can use poster board with a circle wheel in the middle,” a child suggested. “Let’s write each responsibility in the wheel,” added another. “We can take a picture of each responsibility,” offered another child. “And then we can hang it and put a nail so it could spin.” The children were excited about this idea and eager to contribute to its design. We look forward to following up with them next week to begin construction of our Classroom Responsibility Spinning Wheel! Vertical Learning We continue to engage the children in fine motor activities through cutting, sorting, manipulating small loose parts, working with crayons, pencils, and clay. This week the children continued to work with magazines and scissors at the Art Center, they used this time to cut of the letters in their names as well as begin to cut out the letters in the alphabet. At the Math Center the children continued their exploration of measurement through small blocks, links, and loose parts. They used scales and rulers to weigh and measure these materials as well as measure a variety of things around the classroom. The class has truly been enjoying a variety of puzzles where they work independently and collectively. As a class we have continued with Jolly Phonics, focusing on the letter, “A” and “S.” Next week, we will introduce the letter, “T.” Ask your child what new words they have come up with that start with the letter “A” and “S.”
