We introduced our new letter for the week “F”. They learned that you need one “Big Line” and two “Little Lines”. They are learning that when we form the letter you make the Big Line and to make the small lines from the Big Line out! We then read a book called, Frances Frog Forever Friend. This had a lot of words that start with the letter F. We rolled our dough in the shape of an F. We went on a letter scavenger hunt in our books during independent reading time. This week, they were able to sit with a partner and showed each other the letter L and F that they found in their books.
Part of the Handwriting Without Tears program helps kids learn more about the lines we use when writing as well as shapes and how to make a person. This brings in our vocabulary of a “Big Line” and “Little Line”. They use these as part of “Mat Man’s” body parts. We played a cute song to teach about these parts with the lines and then had the kids do it themselves. They really understood the parts and were able to replicate it themselves later on. We talked about dream catchers this week. The kids are making their own to bring home around Thanksgiving. We talked about how these are used for catching good dreams but letting the bad dreams pass right through. They first used droppers and small paint brushes to paint the outside of their dream catchers. The next step was to sew yarn through the holes of the outside of the dream catchers. Both the droppers and the sewing is one way to strengthen their fine motor skills. After they finished sewing, they beaded at the bottom to make it look nice and make it their own. After they finished these steps they came to a teacher to express their words about their good dreams and bad dreams. We discussed how these dream catches will catch the good dreams they have and then let the bad dreams pass right on through. We were lucky enough to have an explorers class come visit us for a fun lesson. Room 13 came to join us one morning. We made the connection to giving thanks with the firefighters and all their hard work, to the holiday of Thanksgiving. Chen and Hannah brought their class to us so we could sit side by side under our beautiful tree in the classroom to read The Giving Tree. We read the book page by page in English and in Hebrew. We had a discussion about what the tree gave to the little boy. We were then able to talk about if the boy gave anything back to the tree. They couldn’t think of anything tangible that the boy gave to the tree. We were then driven to talk about how giving can be a feeling and not just gifts, and how we feel good when we give. We can give the firefighters our love by making a poster and cards and letting them know how much we appreciate their hard work. We can give to each other every day by showing kindness in and out of the classroom. We can help friends if they need help. It was so nice to have another classroom come in and share in this experience with us. We hope to do more with them in the future. We look forward to continuing our discussions on giving thanks and the many ways we can show this mitzvah.
