With the beauty of the rain it has been a great opportunity to talk about the holiday of Tu BiShevat and growing trees and being thankful for the nature around us. We have had many discussions about trees: how they grow, the change over time (Wise Learning Process), what they start as, what they grow into, how they might not always grow into something, the change in seasons, the word photosynthesis and much more.
Using the Wise Learning Process curriculum, we had a few discussions this week. Our first discussion had to do with the “Details” of a plant. Our goal was for the kids to be reminded of this icon. We also wanted them to point out and describe the details of a plant. We discussed what a detail was again and how we used words to describe things just like an adjective. We talked about plants after we planted our own in a cup. The kids were given the opportunity to pick from parsley, basil, cilantro or roses. After they picked which seed they wanted to plant they took dirt and put it in a cup. They then sprinkled some seeds on top and added more dirt on top. They poured water over it. After this activity we came to the carpet and had a discussion on the parts and “details” of a plant. They knew a plant starts with a seed. They described how after the seed comes a stem. From the stem it can form branches and leaves. They knew it took time for a plant to grow and they remembered the word photosynthesis and the process of needing sunlight and water for the plant to grow properly. We discussed the “Change Over Time”, which is also part of our Wise Learning Process curriculum. We were not able to finish this process because we have to wait and see how our plants grow. The change in the process will be very interesting and we cannot wait to watch the change from dirt, to sprout, to stem and then the plant. We will update you on the process. We had a break in the rain so we put our jackets on and walked around our beautiful campus to look at the difference in the trees and observe with our eyes what makes them different. We came across and aloe plant and we took a piece off and each kid was able to touch the inside and feel the aloe inside. They had a lot to say about the pine tree. They see pine cones all over our campus and the pine needles which got them excited to show what they know and explore the campus to find out about new plants. We looked forward to the week ahead where we will be honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We read a book called My First Biography Martin Luther King, Jr. We spoke about how people are treated and how he stood up for people and how others may be treated fairly or not. The children really understood the concept and took in all the information about how we are all equal. They did an activity where they took 2 colors of paint on a piece of paper, put it into a large baggie and closed it up and mixed it around on top with their hands. Once it dried it looks just like the earth. We will make connections next week between taking care of each other and taking care of the world.
