Our theme of beginnings continues once again. The children have noticed not only the beginnings of a sukkah being built on our patio, but also all around our campus. They have already begun asking a lot of questions and making comments about what they are observing. “What is that out there?” “Why is it built out of wood?” “Can we play in there?” “Is it safe?” “I want to eat snack inside there!”
On Friday we took a walk around the sukkah and observed all the pieces that go into it. We then came back inside to have a group discussion on the rug. We sang the song, “This is what we need to build a sukkah.” After we learned this song and took what we remembered from observing the sukkah, the children were able to tell us what we need at the beginning to build a sukkah. “We need a hammer and nails.” “You pound the hammer hard into the wood.” “You need to hit the nail to get them together.” “The nail is going to go down down down to make it straight and not fall.” “I observed rubber bands holding something together with my eyes.” “I saw nails attaching the sukkah together.” “I touched the tree and leaf pieces.” “I saw the sukkah with my eyes.” “I saw wood.” “I saw the wood holding the sukkah.” “I saw the nail holding the wood together.” “It is the shape of a square and there is an opening on one side.” We can’t wait until next week when we get to go pray, sing, dance, learn and eat in the sukkah. We will shake the lulav and etrog and learn all about the customs of Sukkot. We will be building a sukkah out of natural and recycled materials. If you have anything at home please send them in with your child on Tuesday!
