We started out the week joining the whole EC for our first Havdalah service. We learned that Havdalah means separation. We separate Shabbat from the rest of the week. We talked to the class before we left and asked them to pay attention and observe with their eyes and ears to let us know something they learned during the service. We talked to the class after we got back and this is what they said:
The kids learned a new responsibility they will have when they walk in the room in the morning. This is the start of not only our handwriting program but also part of our Wise Learning Process. Our goals were to have the children recognize the letter of their name and match them with the clothespins with the same letter. We are also working on their fine motor skills which will strengthen by pinching the clothespin when matching the letters. We noticed the kids remembered right away to come to the table and find their name. They were excited to start this process. We continue to work on their fine motor skills. We observed the children experimenting with the wood pieces we were given to start our handwriting program, Handwriting Without Tears. They will get familiar with the wood pieces and listen to us use the words “Big Line”, “Little Line”, “Big Curve”, and “Little Curve”. The kids gravitated towards the pieces right away. They started making tracks with the “Big Lines”. They first started trying to build upwards with them and realized they were flat pieces and can make pictures with them. “Look at the uppercase D that I made!” “This looks like a C!” “You made an S for Sammy!” “I made the target symbol.” “That looks like a river.” “We made a race track.” “This can be a C, a rainbow, and a mountain.” “That looks like a snake.” “The curve piece can be a hat.” We enjoyed watching the kids experiment with these pieces and come up with creative ways to use them. We have started to talk about Fall/Autumn. We have been working on art projects all week to learn more about the season. We took a nature walk and collected leaves to make our own collage to hang up and look through them and see the light from outside. We also tore paper to help with our fine motor skills and each child was able to make another collage to see the nice colors we observe in the Fall. The kids also enjoyed marble painting. They took marbles from fall colored paint and were able to shake a box to move the paint around. Our classroom looks like Fall/Autumn has finally come to Wise School.
