We had a nice week in Room 7. We started off by ending the holiday of Hanukkah with frying our own doughnuts in the classroom. The process was a lot of fun and the kids couldn’t wait to have a turn to help flip the dough as well as sprinkle their own cinnamon and sugar as well as powdered sugar onto their own doughnut to eat. They got to choose between powdered sugar or cinnamon and sugar… or both! They put them in baggies and shook them up to spread it all over the doughnut. They loved that they got to do all of this by themselves.
The kids have been really interested in all types of music. They love listening to music and they love singing and playing different instruments. The letter this week we focused on was the letter E. We used our ears to listen to many things around us. We went on a listening walk around the school to use our sense of hearing. They saw the books we put out for them and they gravitated towards them right away. We have been bringing out different instruments for the kids to look at and explore. Using the curriculum from our Wise Learning Process we are going to learn and explore “Change Over Time” in music. We will be going to discuss music in the past, present and future. They are extremely interested in music and we would like to also take our emergent curriculum we use in the EC and explore further into what this class is interested in. We fell right into it when we focused on the letter E this week. We listen with our ears. Ears begins with the letter E. We have been listening to sounds around us, instruments and music from the past. They are into Jazz, Rock and Roll and the songs Elvis sang! We dove deeper into our Wise Learning Process study. To start off our emergent curriculum as well we needed the learning to come from the children. We started off by teaching them the difference between a question and a statement. Then we had them ask questions about music. We wanted to see what they wanted to learn about and after we get their questions, we will research together to find the answers to their own questions. Some questions were: “What is a guitar?” “What is a drum?” “What is a piano?” “What is a trumpet/” “What is a ukulele?” “Do you use sticks when you play the drums?” We love how when they started asking questions, someone noticed that all the questions started with the word what! We look forward to this unit of study with the kids. I’m sure we will all learn more about music with their questioning. This week in music we were lucky enough to have David Kates our music teacher, help us learn even more about music. We let him know that we are focusing on the study of music and he helped us by going over the pitch of a drum. The smaller the higher pitch. The bigger the lower pitch. After they each got a chance to repeat what he did, they got to sit with the big drums and follow his lead. They were such great listeners and followed his beat and rhythm. We look forward to many more visits and lessons in the Music Lab! We also started the process in making our own drums. They started off in the art center by painting the outside of a round cardboard roll. Next week we will experiment with different materials to see what makes the best sound.
