Between Earth Day, our field trip, and Yom HaAztmaut, the fifth grade had quite an exciting week! First we had a school-wide Earth Day celebration in which our students used recyclable materials to make a decorative garden piece. Fifth graders also help plant in our garden, and picked fresh mint! We also attended the Skirball museum in preparation and anticipation of our immigration simulation. The students learned what it was like to emigrate to the United States, and the many challenges they faced. They also worked in groups to piece together the story of 5 immigrants to the United States from different time periods. It was an enriching hands on experience that will be further brought to life next week with our simulation! This week we also celebrated Israel's Independence on Yom HaAtzmaut. We celebrated by doing Israeli dance, sampling Israeli food, and watching the fourth grade program! Mrs. Fridman's Hebrew class also learned about the map of Israel for the occasion. Important Upcoming Events:
Monday, April 27: Parent Meeting, 8:15am Wednesday, April 29: Immigration Simulation, 8am Friday May 1-May 2: Shabbaton
This week the fifth grade had the opportunity to attend an assembly commemorating those who perished in the Holocaust. We had the privilege of hearing a presentation by survivor Leon Prochnik. His story of determination, imagination, and survival was captivating and moving. The students are currently working on illustrations that portray portions of his life he spoke of.
Here is a link to Mr. Prochnik's biography.
