This week's B'nei Mitzvah meeting was well attended by the parents of rooms 40 and 41! This was an exciting first step for our fifth graders as they begin their journey toward their bar and bat mitzvah preparation. The fifth graders were also introduced in their Judaica classes to the presentation of their D'var Torah . Each week a different student will teach their interpretation of the week's Torah portion, connect it to their lives, and lead a class discussion. News and Announcements:

This week, both fifth grade classes began an enriching program on mindfulness presented by the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. The students were introduced to the concept of mindfulness, concentration, listening, and being in the present. Below are some photos from our first session. The students practiced being still and listening, with their eyes open and closed, and compared the experiences. We look forward to incorporating these practices into classroom management and routines in the coming weeks. In Mrs. Orevi's Hebrew class, the students have begun working on vocabulary related to what is forbidden and what is allowed. The students made projects in which they explain the rules of various games and sports to practice! News and Announcements:

The fifth grade had the wonderful opportunity to hear Sonia Levitin, author of "Journey to America," share her story. The students read Levitin's novel over the summer and were able to ask her questions about her life and the process of writing her book. It was a fascinating and enriching experience for the students! The fifth graders also heard from Betty Birney, author of the "Humphrey" series. They learned about her inspiration for creating the series, her wonderful literary achievements, and her path from advertising to beloved children's book author! In addition to the book fair, Rooms 40 and 41 also held elections for class representative. The students wrote and delivered excellent speeches. Check out who was voted in! News and Announcements:
