It sure has been an eventful week! The 3rd grade survived two visits by a skunk! Thankfully, no one got sprayed. Everyone sure got a kick out of it.
The students are contining to research, explore, and take notes on their wild animal for their independent studies project. They are learning how to parahprase and cite sources. Very exciting stuff! In PE, the 3rd grade started playing volleyball this week. They've had a good time practicing during recess as well. In art, students are finishing up making their very own Kiddush cups out of clay. They look great! Lastly, students in Mrs. Fridman's class read the story "Malka's Shabbat Dress". After learning the song "Who Likes Shabbat" and the verbs "sing" and "dance". students wrote their own verse to the song. If you have not done so already, please sign up for parent conferences. Shabbat Shalom!

in We've had another great week in 3rd grade. The students have begun rehearsing their songs and lines together in the synagogue where they are learning their blocking and how the whole Passover performance looks with all three 3rd grade classes. It's coming along great. During Mrs. Frost's library time, Jillian came by to be a guest reader for Read Across America! Thank you, Jillian! In Mrs. Orevi's Hebrew class, they are applying the Wise Learning Process to improve their Hebrew and to learn deeply. They used the Concentric Circle and the Prompts of Depth and Complexity to utilize scaffolding in clarifying concepts and the big idea of Unit 4 in our Keshet. They became Creative and made Great Happen with the unit about Haverim. The students are beginning their independent study project on wild animals. A form is being sent home with links to websites that are good research sources. Attached is a copy of that paper along with a downloadable file. We look forward to seeing all of the student's progress. Dear Parents and Students, Here are some resources to help you with your research. This is a great search engine to start your research: http://www.kidrex.org/ The information for these websites is also on our Weebly page. Try these websites: National Geographic Kids: http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/ Animal Facts A-Z: http://animalfactguide.com San Diego Zoo Kids: http://kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals Discovery Kids: http://discoverykids.com/category/animals/ Animal Database on Kids Biology.com: www.kidsbiology.com/animals Animal Information and Coloring Pages: http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/explore/nature/coloring-book-animals-a-to-i/ Endangered Species: http://www.animalfactguide.com/animal-facts/ Please research and find information about the animal you are studying. Print the information and bring it to school tomorrow. You should have information about the animal from at least two sources, but no more than three. Have Fun!
Happy Friday! This week the third grade students continue to make progress on their Passover performance. In addition to continuing to practice their singing and choreography, students began practicing the script and reading their lines. Things are finally starting to come together and it's very exciting for all. In Project Studio the third-graders have been learning about architect Paul Williams who was one of the first African-American architects in Los Angeles. He built many well-known buildings in the Los Angeles area. Students did an inquiry activity where they moved through different stations with artifacts relating to Paul Williams. While in the groups, they had to answer questions based on the artifacts at each station. Next week they will begin to build three-dimensional blueprints. In technology students have been building robots that they have been controlling with iPads. Below are videos of some of the third-graders with the robots. Shabbat Shalom! Enjoy your weekend. Happy Friday! We've had a wonderful week in 3rd grade. When we returned to school on Wednesday, we celebrated President's Day by wearing red, white, and blue. We had a wonderful assembly in which a band, led by Maestro David Kates, played songs about America while teachers read quotes from presidents and other American icons. Students enjoyed singing, dancing, and celebrating American presidents and our country. The 3rd graders are having a great time practicing their songs and dances for the Passover performance. Soon, speaking roles will be assigned. What fun! Lastly, 3rd graders are continuing to learn about slavery and the impact it had on America. During reading, some students were investigating and learning about slavery on laptops. Shabbat Shalom! Enjoy your weekend. Happy Friday!
Thank you to all the parents who came to Praying with Parents this morning. It was great to start the morning with you all. We know your children appreciate you coming. This week, the 3rd graders continued practicing their dances and singing for what will be the Passover performance. In Project Studio, the children are learning about architecture and will soon begin working on their 3D blue prints. Just a reminder that there is no school Monday (President's Day) or Tuesday (pupil free day). Students can wear red, white, and blue attire on Wednesday to celebrate President's Day. Enjoy your long weekend! Happy Friday!
This week the 3rd graders have begun rehearsing for the Pesach program. They have been practicing songs, learning about the script, and learning some of the choreography for the dances. It’ll sure be exciting! We have also begun reading With Open Hands: A Story about Biddy Mason. It’s a true story about an African American slave and her journey. The students are excited to learn more about Biddy Mason and what the life of a slave was like. Lastly, the 3rd graders had a nice visit with their 1st grade buddies. They love each other! Shabbat Shalom This week we had a very exciting field trip to La Plaza at Olvera Street. The 3rd graders got a chance to see and experience a part of Los Angeles that they have been learning about in Project Studio. We all had a great time. The students especially enjoyed the Avila Adobe and the first fire station. Thank you SO much to the parents who helped out!
We hope you enjoy a wonderful LONG weekend! There is NO school on Monday OR Tuesday. We look forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces on Wednesday. Shabbat Shalom The new year is off to a great start! Despite a rainy beginning to the week, the sun is shining (for now!) and we are having a wonderful Friday.
In Project Studio this week, students continued working in groups to make maps of Los Angeles. A few weeks ago, they mapped out what the Los Angeles looked like when the Gabriellino Tongva Native Americans lived here. They included types of housing and other landmarks. This week, the students added another layer of paper and began drawing what Los Angeles looked like when the city was founded by Mexican Americans. In addition to doing hands on Social Studies in Project Studio, the students have been enjoying reading TIME For Kids and California Weekly to learn about past and current events that affect our world today. Lastly, our wonderful Klei Kodesh students talked about how they pay respect to God. Have a wonderful weekend. Stay dry! Important Dates: January 12, 2016 | Risk Management Meeting, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM January 14, 2016 | Field trip to Olvera St. January 18, 2016 | School and Temple Closed for MLK Day Happy Friday! This week the 3rd grade students presented their book reports that they have been working so hard on. They did a tremendous job writing about the main character and their traits. Their “heads” came out looking great! Below are some pictures and video from their presentations. In Hebrew, Mrs. Fridman’s class is learning about verbs “catch” and “throw”. They went out side to throw a ball and say the words that their fingers landed on. Below are pictures from that activity. On Thursday, the Israeli students visiting Wise School went back to Israel. We enjoyed having them and our 5th graders were really happy to make new friends. Thursday was Israeli Spirit Day and everyone was very enthusiastic. Here are some pictures and video from that wonderful day. We’ll see you in two weeks. Happy New Year! |
