Kindergarten: This week we learned about force, motion, pushes and pulls. The students experimented with gears, toy cars, marbles, ramps, and different types of balls to practice putting objects in motion. 1st Grade: This week we continued to learn about sound. The students learned about the relationship between pitch and speed of vibration, and the difference between pitch and volume. The students experimented with tuning forks and PVC palm pipes in order to make different sounds. 2nd Grade: This week we continued to learn about the properties of matter. We compared and contrasted properties of objects using Venn Diagrams. 3rd Grade: This week we continued to learn about balanced and unbalanced forces. The students experimented with these topics through Tug-of-War and Jenga. 4th Grade: This week we continued to learn about light and sound. The students used mini flashlights, phosphorescent vinyl, and diffraction grating to experiment with light and color, and learned about convex and concave lenses. 5th Grade: This week we continued to learn about chemistry. We focused on subatomic particles and the periodic table. The students experimented by building models of atoms and molecules using different materials. 6th Grade: This week the students applied their knowledge of thermal energy by building and using solar ovens to cook hot dogs out on the Plaza. They also experimented with convection using hot and cold colored water to see which would float and which would sink in room temperature water.
