Pre K: This week we continued to learn about seeds. The students examined different types of seeds using magnifying glasses, and even planted squash seeds up in our Plaza Garden! Kindergarten: This week we learned about simple machines. The students watched a video all about the different types of simple machines, and then explored using various simple machines around the room. 1st Grade: This week we went to the garden! We harvested different crops to donate to the Valley Shelter, learned how to identify various types of crops, and helped clean up the different beds. We were very productive! 2nd Grade: This week we continued to focus on the properties of objects. The students took turns building towers out of different materials in order to see which are best for building tall, sturdy towers. 3rd Grade: This week we continued our study of forces. The students worked in different stations to see how force affected different objects. We experimented with gears, balloon air hockey pucks, marbles and bowls, pendulums, and the Newton's Cradle. 4th Grade: This week we continued our study of heat, focusing specifically on heat transfer. The students experimented with ice cubes and cups made out of different materials to see which materials were the best conductors or insulators. 5th: This week we had our first test on Chemistry! As soon as the tests are graded, they will be returned and sent home for a parent signature. 6th Grade: This week we had out first test on Thermal Energy. As soon as the tests are graded, they will be returned and sent home for a parent signature.

PreK: This week we continued to learn about seeds. The students examined different types of seeds using magnifying glasses, and even planted squash seeds up in our Plaza Garden! Kindergarten: This week we continued to learn about force, motion, pushes and pulls. The students experimented with gears, toy cars, marbles, ramps, and different types of balls to practice putting objects in motion. 1st Grade: This week we continued to learn about energy. The students worked at stations and participated in different activities that demonstrated force and energy with a variety of object. 2nd Grade: This week we learned about simple machines. The student learned the parts and purposes of simple machines through an educational video, and experimented with different simple machines around the room. 3rd Grade: This week we learned about simple machines. The student learned the parts and purposes of simple machines through an educational video, and experimented with different simple machines around the room. 4th Grade: This week we learned about heat. The students learned about the transfer of energy by heat, and watched an educational video explaining the process. 5th Grade: This week we continued to learn about chemical reactions. The students learned about what happens when chemicals mix, and created chemical reactions of their own by mixing phenol red, calcium chloride, and baking soda. They loved watching the reaction change color and become incredibly hot! The students began reviewing for their upcoming science test on chemistry, which is on Wednesday, 10/22. The test will be on the notes in their notebooks, as well as pages assigned for reading in their ScienceSaurus books. 6th Grade: This week the students reviewed for their upcoming science test on thermal energy, which is on Thursday, 10/23. The test will be on the notes in their notebooks, as well as pages assigned for reading in their ScienceSaurus books. Kindergarten: This week we learned about force, motion, pushes and pulls. The students experimented with gears, toy cars, marbles, ramps, and different types of balls to practice putting objects in motion. 1st Grade: This week we continued to learn about sound. The students learned about the relationship between pitch and speed of vibration, and the difference between pitch and volume. The students experimented with tuning forks and PVC palm pipes in order to make different sounds. 2nd Grade: This week we continued to learn about the properties of matter. We compared and contrasted properties of objects using Venn Diagrams. 3rd Grade: This week we continued to learn about balanced and unbalanced forces. The students experimented with these topics through Tug-of-War and Jenga. 4th Grade: This week we continued to learn about light and sound. The students used mini flashlights, phosphorescent vinyl, and diffraction grating to experiment with light and color, and learned about convex and concave lenses. 5th Grade: This week we continued to learn about chemistry. We focused on subatomic particles and the periodic table. The students experimented by building models of atoms and molecules using different materials. 6th Grade: This week the students applied their knowledge of thermal energy by building and using solar ovens to cook hot dogs out on the Plaza. They also experimented with convection using hot and cold colored water to see which would float and which would sink in room temperature water. |
