Dear Ulpanon Bet Parents,
The gusty winds and rain did not deter the children from learning and having fun! We started the week by chopping, mixing and cooking colorful vegetables – dla’at, gezer, kishoo, veh celery (butternut squash, carrot, zucchini and celery) – for a delicious marak yerakot (vegetable soup) to keep us warm. The children added more words to their winter vocabulary with a memory game, and enjoyed dressing up and playing in the warm clothes and accessories and hanging them up on the clothes line. We learned a new song and read the accompanying book, Yaldah Achat oo'Mitriyah Achat, by Datia Ben Dor, about a girl with an umbrella who meets her friends along the path, and invites them, one by one, to join her under her umbrella to stay dry. The video for the book and song can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpeiC-UWB0U. We also read Ha’Arnav Shehratza Rak Marak (The Rabbit Who Wanted Only Soup), and Etti Spaghetti. We introduced the “Birthday for the Trees”, the holiday of Tu B’Shevat, to the class. The children painted pots for planting and practiced holiday vocabulary with a movement game to act out parts of the tree: gezah (trunk), anafim (branches), alim (leaves), and shorashim (roots). During Music with Ditza, they sang birthday songs for the trees, and planting and gardening songs, while moving with trowels, shovels, rakes and a watering can. We continued to learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. and his Mish’ala (wish); the children watched his 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech the Freedom March in Washington and were especially mesmerized by his words about his own children, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” They shared their thoughts about Martin Luther King in their Journal pages, and also created beautiful chalk drawings with captions about their own wishes for a better world through love and treating everyone the same. We had the honor of a double library time this week, and the children were very excited! Kol chose Curious George Goes to a Movie, by Margaret & H.A. Rey, and Liam’s choice was Sammy Spider’s First Tu B’Shevat, by Sylvia A. Rouss. Thank you to Shannon Bachsihan and Sivan Zakai for reading to us! During P.E. with Coach Danny, the children split into two teams for a game of Kickball. The ‘cone kids’ player rolled the ball, while the player from the kicking team kicked it back and ran around the bases as their teammates counted. The object was to count until the members of the cone team passed the ball around to each player to earn points. The kids had a fabulous time practicing their targeting, strategy, running, hand-eye/foot-eye coordination, and counting skills. Reminders:
Thank you to Jacob Araghi and family for helping us usher in Shabbat. Shabbat Shalom! Shoshi and Meirav
