Dear Parents, We continued our emergent curriculum of citrus fruits from last week to segue into our activities of Tu B’Shevat. The children learned that Tu B’Shevat is a holiday that celebrates the birth of the trees and nature. We talked about trees here in the United States and that the shkeydiah (almond tree) grows in abundance in Israel during Tu B’Shevat and is a symbol of the holiday. Wise Learning Process Moment – Details – Similarities and Differences: Peyrot Hadar: The children brought in a variety of citrus fruits and discussed/shared information about where they grow, what kind of trees they come from, how they are gathered and picked, and what we can make with them. We discussed how all the fruits are called Peyrot Hadar (Citrus Fruits). The children sorted the fruits and taste tested them, comparing the shapes, sizes, skin/peel, smells and tastes, and noting the similarities and differences.
We had a wonderful time squeezing lemons for lemonade and oranges for juice and our orange juice cake. We joined our friends in Room 9 for the story, Happy Birthday, Tree! A Tu B’Shevat Story, by Madelyn Rosenberg. We also read the book, HaShtil Shel Moran (Moran’s Sapling/Seedling), by Sarah Zluf. In this story, a group of schoolchildren in Israel take a field trip with their school to plant trees in honor of Tu B’Shevat. They receive individual seedlings in pots to care for at home. All the children promise to take great care of their plants, with mixed results, some overwatering them and some underwatering. Mor is the only child who nurtures her seedling into a healthy and thriving plant. They children learn that we should care for nature with kavanah (mindfulness) and love. Specialists: During P.E. with Coach Danny, the children enjoyed a fun game of Hula Hoop & Bean Bag Tic-Tac-Toe. They worked their locomotor skills in two groups and strategized together on how best to throw the bean bags to mark three hoops in a row (up, down, sideways and diagonal). The children also tried to block the other team from winning. We went on a Tropical Island Yoga Adventure with Teacher Cheryl and Noru, the surfing puppet. The children practiced the Cat, Reverse Tabletop, Tree and Warrior 2 poses. Ditza led us in singing Tu B’Shevat songs, including BaGina (In the Garden) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0JYdDXqmDY. The children also danced with scarves to the changing fast and slow beats of Guy Holech Maher (Guy is Walking Quickly) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewTTOujHLlQ. Thank you to Levi and family for helping us usher in Shabbat. Special Dates:
Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom! B’vracha, Shoshi and Meirav
