Welcome back and Happy 2019, Ulpanon Bet Families! The children came back from winter break and were excited to talk about their adventures. They had the opportunity to draw and share their words in their journal pages: “I went to New York to visit Momma and Poppa; they live in a 17 floor building on the 5th floor,” “ I went to Big Bear and sled on the snow,” “I had a sleepover with my cousin and went to the aquarium,” “I baked banana bread with my mom and swam in our pool with my dad.” During calendar time, we welcomed the year 2019, the month of January, and the Hebrew month Shevat. The children enjoyed making their own pizzas! They rolled the dough, spread sauce, sprinkled cheese, and selected their toppings of tomatoes, bell peppers, corn and olives. The pizzas were very yummy. Before winter break, we held a child-directed discussion about nature and went on a nature walk. This week we continued the discussion by asking the children about nature and why it’s very special, the children shared that it beautiful to see and the discussion continued to why trees are important and what they give us. We will deepen this discussion in class. In class, we introduced the special nature holiday of Tu B’Shevat. The children remembered that this holiday celebrates the birthday of the trees. We extended our learning and explored a special family of fruits called Citrus fruits - Peyrot Hadar; they grow in the Pardes -orchard. We learned the names of the fruits in Hebrew: Tapuz- orange, Clementina- tangerine, Eshkolit- grapefruit, Pomela-pomelo, Limon- lemon. Here is a link to the Hebrew song we learned about the citrus trees, Shai Min Hapardes-A Treasure from the Orchard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeiCTmqMyvs Wise Learning Process Moment - Details
This week, we put out citrus fruit for a taste test of the various fruits (tangerines, oranges, lemons, grapefruits and pomelos). We had a great discussion about differences and similarities between the fruits. Some of the children’s observations were that “all the citrus fruits are round,” “No, the lemon is an oval shape,” “they all have skin that we can’t eat.” The children also noted that oranges and tangerines are both the same color orange and are also sweet, and lemons are sour. They lined up the fruits by size: Pomelo, grapefruit, orange, lemon, and tangerine. This was a great opportunity for the children to explore taste, smell, size, and shape. The children enjoyed tasting the different fruits and expressing themselves. The children commented that the fruit was very juicy and asked to make lemonade. They also squeezed orange juice and baked an orange juice cake to take home. During P.E. with Coach Danny, the children had a wonderful time in ‘All-Touch Kick Ball. They worked on hand-eye and foot-eye coordination. Thank you to Morgan, Sam’s mom for reading to us during our library time. She read: “A Lesson for Martin Luther King Jr.,” “Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.,” “Happy Birthday Tree,” and “I will Take A Nap.” The children reflected on the MLK books and talked about how Martin as a child said that he wanted to change things, so people of all colors would be treated the same. They noted that as an adult, Dr. King worked for this change. This prompted one child to say that when he grows up, he wants to be “a justice that fights for fairness in the Supreme Court.” Another child shared that she would be a baker and that “anyone can be my partner; it doesn’t matter what color skin they have.” We will continue to explore the concepts of discrimination and fairness further as we introduce the Martin Luther King holiday to the children. The changing weather this week led the children to ask about rain and clouds. We discussed how clouds are formed from the yam-- ocean and how rain falls when the clouds are full. We experimented with science to create a rain cloud from a sponge, water, blue food coloring and a squeeze bottle to watch and predict when the drops would begin to fall. Thank you to Brooke and her family for helping us usher in Shabbat. Important Dates:
Shabbat Shalom and have a wonderful weekend, B’Vracha, Meirav and Shoshi
