Shalom Ulpanon Bet families,
This week our Ulpanon Bet friends learned deeply about Passover. We read the Pesach story and found out the meaning of the word Passover. The children discovered that when the 10 plagues were brought on Pharaoh and the Egyptians, they “passed over” the Israelites’ homes. We learned that the Passover holiday has four names: Chag HaPesach (Passover), Chag HaMatzot (the holiday of matzahs), Chag HaAviv (the holiday of spring), and Chag HaChayrut (the holiday of freedom). The children remembered another word for chayrut that they had learned and discussed: Chofesh. We talked about Miriam, Moshe's sister, who told her mother that she will have a son, and that he will save Israel. Miriam led the women in dance and song at the crossing of the Red Sea with her tof Miriam (tambourine). The children learned how the people of Israel got water from the be’er (well) in the desert and that thanks to Miriam, the people had a ma’ayan (spring) of mayim chayim (fresh, living water) during their years of wandering in the desert on their way to Israel. They also were introduced to the more modern custom of having a Cos Miryam (Miriam’s Cup) filled with fresh water on the Seder table, alongside the traditional Elijah’s Cup of wine. In class we had a display of items representing the four questions of the Ma Nishtana part of the Seder (in the attached pictures). The children talked about the questions and shared their understanding with their friends. They are singing the four questions and other Passover songs throughout the day; their singing is contagious, even during free play and art time. A compilation of children’s Passover songs can be found at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-vXKiUyDQE&t=1268s. We introduced the Seder Plate - K’arat Ha’Seder - and talked about the symbols of the foods, explaining why we eat them to remind us of the Pesach story. We made Charoset in class using apples and dates and ate matzah pizza for snack. The children enjoyed the Charoset we made in class and we talked about how Charoset is a symbol for the mud used to make the pyramids. The children took time to work on their Passover journal page. They drew a picture and shared their perspectives about the Passover holiday and symbols. During calendar time we said goodbye to March; we mentioned that it has 31 days and that the new month of April has 30 days. During P.E with Coach Danny we played “Add On,” where each child got a turn to lead an exercise movement and add it to the previous movement. It was fun to remember each child’s movement. We also practiced volleyball skills and stretched our arms to throw the ball to the other side of the net. The children took turns to roll the dice and follow prompts of jumping, crawling, hopping, etc. Music with Ditza was fun! We sang Passover songs and marched around the classroom with instruments. This week we also had Yoga adventures with Cheryl. The children are improving the yoga poses and are now familiar with many of them. The hand washing policy in the EC has been updated. We are asking each child to wash her or his hands as they walk in the classroom in the morning. Important Dates: ● The Ulpanon Bet Seder is on Wednesday, 4-10-19, at 9:15 am ● The EC is participating in the Sova Drive on Tuesday 4-9-19.
