Shalom Ulpanon Bet Families, This week we deepened our learning about Rosh Hashanah. The children are remembering the holiday vocabulary and are making connections to better understand the meaning of the symbols. One child shared: “We eat tapuchim b’dvash” to have a sweet new year. We also learned about kartis b’racha - greeting card - for the holiday to wish “Shana Tova” to one another. We joined our friends in Room 9 with teachers Linda and Pnina for a discussion about Rosh Hashanah. We enjoyed learning about and experiencing the rimon/ rimonim (pomegranate/s) in class. We discussed why the rimon is another symbol of Rosh Hashanah: “It is a sweet new fruit and its seeds correspond to mitzvot in the Torah. We discussed the importance of doing hamon mitzvot (many good deeds). The children had fun with the garinim (seeds), as they rolled the pomegranates to loosen the seeds and then removed the seeds carefully from the shell of the fruit. We put the seeds in a bowl and added them to our snack.
Later, we sang a pomegranate song in Hebrew called, Ma Ha’Tseva Shel Ha’Rimon? (What is the Color of the Pomegranate?). The children then searched for and collected hidden seeds throughout the room to place on a giant pomegranate that was missing its seeds. During our visit to the Atelier (art studio) with teacher Joanne, we explored working with clay and learned techniques to soften the clay by adding water and kneading gently with your fingers. Water can also be added with a sponge. The children also enjoyed mural painting and viewing pictures on the wall with the overhead projector and slides. During P.E with Coach Danny, the children had a wonderful time warming up with exercises from the It's Your Move! ™ activity dice. Each took a turn to roll the dice and to lead their friends in the activity that they rolled: Forward crawling, running, backwards crab walking, rolling, skipping, jumping, galloping and the grapevine. We then had 3 station rotations: Catch a basket, soft balls and soft frisbees. During music time, Ditza and the children sang Rosh Hashanah songs and a song about the symbols and traditions of the holiday. Here is a link to children’s Rosh Hashanah songs in Hebrew: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBcWvCcwjTA. Yoga with Cheryl was a blast! We practiced breathing with the breathing balls and went on a Yoga Adventure with the firefighter dog, the veterinarian dog, the astronaut and the dog walker. We learned the Staff Pose, Cat Pose, Extended Mountain Pose, and Downward-Facing Dog Pose. Please note that while Ulpanon Bet is the second year of Hebrew Immersion, the children are returning after a summer of English and slowly navigating the Hebrew waters and gaining confidence. As we reach the end of our third week at school, we see them connecting more to the Hebrew and the routines of the classroom. They are remembering words and phrases. They are asking questions when they don’t understand and using context for clarity. Some of you have asked about ways to support their Hebrew outside of the classroom. You can do this by playing Hebrew songs for the children and by clicking on links we include in the newsletters to reinforce what we learned/sang in class. In addition, some of the Hebrew books that we read have corresponding videos. Two of those are:
