Dear Ulpanon Bet Families, The Thanksgiving story came to life in Room 1! We retold the Thanksgiving story with visual crafted dolls, and shared how the Pilgrims traveled to America to seek a better life and freedom; in Hebrew, we called them ”Mehagrim”- immigrants. We looked at the globe to follow the route the Pilgrims took from England to America on the Mayflower. In class, the children created beautiful necklaces. They chose their own “Tavnit” - pattern of beads for their necklaces, and took careful time and attention to put them together. The children will be wearing their necklaces for the Thanksgiving celebration at school. The Big Idea behind the teaching of our Thanksgiving unit and its activities is that of Thankfulness – the concept of giving thanks. In addition to learning about reasons we give thanks during the Thanksgiving holiday from the Thanksgiving story, we are engaging in discussions with the children about how and why we give thanks each day and how this connects to our daily routines and to Judaism. Some points of connection for discussion and expansion:
● We say todah (thank you) each morning with the Modeh Ani blessing ● We are learning the Todah song ● Chag HaHodaya is the holiday of giving thanks ● What are we thankful for? This Big Idea of Thankfulness is an enduring, ongoing concept that will guide and connect us during further discussions and units. We learned a song, “Arba Onot Yesh Ba’Shana” - There are Four Seasons in a Year. The children then discussed and described the different aspects of each season (weather, nature, clothing, activities, and attire). The children are enjoying singing the song, and we are looking forward to changing weather patterns soon. The link to the song can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm_WG-Q-EaA During P.E. with Coach Danny, the children practiced their rolling, jumping, aiming, and running skills in a game of SCAT. They enjoyed taking turns, calling out “freeze”, jumping 10 big jumps, and then rolling the ball to target another friend, before passing the ball to the next child to start again. We enjoyed Yoga with teacher Cheryl exploring the Sphinx Pose, Extended Child’s Pose, Chair Pose, and Alef Pose. We visited the Atelier with Teacher Joanne and continued to work with clay. The children learned how to create a new art called “quilling” - rolling strips of paper and gluing them on canvas. They also explored the mural painting and loose parts centers. Ditza led us in Hebrew songs about colors and seasons. The children danced with colorful scarves to songs about fall. Fall songs can be found at this link: https://youtu.be/lQgtx-Wn2_U. In class we read: Hadlaat Ha’Anakit, The Huge Pumpkin, by Michael Abas, about a huge pumpkin that grew in the garden. The children enjoyed making pumpkin soup, chopping the pumpkin and using a hand mixer. We also grated, mixed and measured pumpkin to make a yummy pumpkin cake. We observed wonderful teamwork as the children collaborated and used various strategies to complete a 100-piece puzzle. They were very proud to complete it! Thank you to Sinclair and family for helping us usher in Shabbat. Special Dates:
