Shalom Ulpanon Bet families,
This week we focused on Hanukkah traditions as we joined our friends in Room 9 to read and discuss the book, Queen of the Hanukkah Dosas” by Pamela Ehrenberg. The family in the book came together to make a fried Hanukkah treat from India called Dosas. We then talked about various traditions and ways Hanukkah is celebrated in different places and families. The children noted that “Some families make latkes, sufganiyot or dosas,” and “it’s because of the shemen (oil) that lasted for eight days; that’s why we eat fried stuff.” In class, we made our own Hanukkah fried treat called Zalabias, a traditional Sephardic dessert. The children enjoyed mixing the ingredients and watching the dough rise. It was very yummy! We are sharing the recipe with you at the end of the newsletter. The children created their own svivonim, decorating them with that Hebrew letters of from the dreidel. They shared their knowledge of the meaning of the letters, Nes Gadol Hayah Sham (a great miracle happened there) and wrote the Hebrew letters on their svivonim. Hebrew language is flowing freely in the Ulpanon Bet classroom! We notice children responding more often in Hebrew and incorporating it into their own conversations: During a game of lunchtime “Knock, Knock”, the kids remembered the words in Hebrew and began saying, ‘Tuk, Mi Sham?’ in place of the English. It is exciting to hear! During P.E. with Coach Danny, the children practiced the skills they learned in last week’s Kickball games. On our yoga adventure with Teacher Cheryl and yoga puppet Kelly we learned the Cobbler’s, Warrior 2, Reclining Bound Angel and Reverse Tabletop poses. Music with Ditza was dedicated to practicing our Hanukkah songs for our party. Thank you to Shai and family in helping us usher in Shabbat. Special Dates:
