We were very busy this week drawing, performing science experiments, observing, participating in cooperative play, and celebrating a wet Shabbat.
Early in the week before performing our color changing carnation flowers science experiment we took an opportunity to lay out the carnations at our art table with nothing more than a large piece of white paper and pencil. Tania sat with a few of the children discussing the different parts of the flower and what the flower looked like to each child. The children were then given the freedom to sketch/draw what they saw. While drawing something, the brain and hands work together giving the children the ability to hold a pencil or any other writing tool, an understanding of how much pressure is needed for the specific tool, as well as developing their eye-hand coordination and their pincher grip all skills that will serve them as they continue on in school. Once the children were done drawing flowers we were able to meet as a group and perform our science experiment. We talked about the color of the carnations. All of the friends observed that they were white. We talked about adding color to the water that we were going to keep the flowers in then decided what colors to use. The children all agreed upon red, blue, and green. We added several drops of food coloring to each vase then placed a few stems into each vase. The children have been observing the flowers and how they are changing into the color that was added. We are also observing the growth or lack of in our two terrariums. Many of the children have taken an interest in the fact that things thrive differently in various environments While out playing on the yard Wednesday some of the children looked up and observed a giant crane from the construction site moving around coming in the direction of our yard. We all began to watch it as it moved towards us. It was very exciting to watch as it moved up and down working to pick up an air conditioning unit. This led to a discussion about cranes and the various things that they can move. Sammy told Tricia with a smile on his face that “maybe the crane was going to pick her up”. We enjoyed a beautiful Southern California week of weather but… ended very wet. While talking with the children about the rain coming Shiloh asked “why is it raining all the time now”? Which prompted many of the children to revisit the topic of rain and the rain cycle we have been learning about which lead to Ella T. to tell Tricia and some of the friends “that rainbows come from the rain” Tricia then asked “what is a rainbow? Ella T. said “it’s from the sky” and then Brayden told everyone that “I see it when I’m driving”. With lots more rain expected to come we will continue to explore rain and look forward to seeing some rainbows. We enjoyed a quiet Shabbat trying to stay warm and dry as the rain came down. Shabbat Shalom T & T Reminders
