A few of the children came into class at the beginning of the week asking about the caterpillar our friend Lexi rescued and brought in last Friday. We sat down with this small group and shared with them that we let the caterpillar loose on our patio. Some of the children did not understand why. Celine was more interested in what happens to the caterpillar now that it’s loose in the garden.
We proceeded to talk about how the caterpillar needed to be in an environment that was more accommodating to its’ needs. We discussed some of the things the caterpillar needs to live, things that it wasn’t going to be able to get in a glass jar inside our classroom over the weekend. Some of the children were sad that they would not get to look at the caterpillar anymore, however, a few were fascinated with the fact that the caterpillar needed to be outside in the dirt with the plants. We continued the conversation about the metamorphosis, or change, that the caterpillar would undergo. Orli even made a connection between the caterpillar turning into something “new,” a butterfly, and Rosh Hashanah, the New Year. We talked about what a year is and touched upon the concept of time and how things change and grow over time. The children realized that the caterpillar was going to take time and change into the butterfly. We look forward to continually revisiting the concept of time in different ways throughout the year with the children as different topics arise relating to the concept of time. Many of the children spent time this week working on their loose parts art work. Some of the children get very excited to share with us and their classmates how they can change the look of what they have created day by day. Alexa made some unique changes to her project by adding a third dimension, lifting it up off the page. We are always looking for additional loose parts to add to our collection for the children to use. Wednesday, we enjoyed music and movement with Marcos and sang songs for Rosh Hashanah. The children enthusiastically sang and played instruments as we marched around the room. Jonathan played the tambourine and Kenny rattled the bells. We also enjoyed yoga with teacher Cheryl. Sophia did a perfect Child’s Pose. During yoga, our yoga guide, Bubbie, taught us yoga poses relating to Rosh Hashanah. Friday we celebrated a quiet Shabbat in our classroom altogether, saying the blessings and eating Challah. We went to Temple for an all-school Shabbat to celebrate the New Year. Shabbat Shalom Tania, Julia, and Tricia
