We started of the week with the most exciting thing… Our pinto beans grew so much over the weekend while we were away from school. We performed a fascinating science experiment. The children planted grass seeds and lima beans. While all of the children participated in a discussion about terrariums, some of them chose to help create two small terrariums in our room. We enjoyed a lovely Shabbat baking rainbow hallah followed by an all school Shabbat honoring all the dads and grandads.
We continued talking about the holiday of Tu B’Shevat and everything flower, plant, and tree related. As the children arrived to school Monday morning many of them remembered to check their pinto bean plants. They were so excited to see that they had sprouted and begun growing roots. The children learned about comparing and contrasting beans and seeds, fruits and vegetables, and how some fruits and vegetables grow on trees, plants or in the ground. Many of the children enjoyed planting grass seeds in clear cups with soil while others planted lima beans in bags with cotton. Just like with our pinto beans the children are excited to check in on their grass seeds and lima beans each day. In between the rain we had an opportunity to go outside on our patio to water our plants and get a breath of fresh air. During one of our morning circles we had a discussion about growing plants in a closed environment which is called a “terrarium”. Some of the children helped create two different types of small terrariums for our science table. Both containing the same seeds but, one containing soil and the other containing cotton. Once again, the children had another opportunity to explore the concepts of comparing and contrasting. With all the much needed rain we’ve been having the children are noticing that we are spending lots of time playing inside. Early in the week on one of our rainy days we revisited the rain cycle. The children told us that there was so much rain going into the clouds. As a class we decided to become scientists by conducting an experiment. We decided that we would try and measure how much rain was actually falling. The children came up with the idea of collecting rain in a cup. Then with a little help we all decided to collect the rain while we were busy in our classroom. Throughout the morning many of the children checked on the cup to see if it was filling up. During clean-up the children remembered we had to bring in our cup of rain water. While bringing in the cup the children noticed that it was not raining so much anymore. The children examined the cup and decided it had a lot of rain in it. They decided to test out the theory that there was not as much rain as there was earlier in the morning by placing a second cup outside for the same amount of time. After the hour we brought the second cup in. Measured the amount of rain in a measuring cup and then placed the rain water back into its original cup and placing the cups side by side to compare which had collected more rain, our first cup or second cup. Friday we enjoyed celebrating Shabbat in our classroom all together. We baked individual challot and one big special rainbow hallah for all of the children to enjoy during snack. We read a few books for Shabbat teaching us the value of making something from nothing. All of children were happy to share the Shabbat service, honoring all of the dads and grandads. Thank you to all of the dads and grandads that made it out in the rain.
