This has been a lovely week with visits from the mommies and grandmothers in honor of Mother’s Day. The children were very excited to make and put together their Mother’s Day gifts.
We enjoyed starting off the week with an all school Havdalah service in Plotkin Chapel. It truly was a beautiful way to come together and welcome each other back at school. We were so excited to come back to class Monday morning to find that our caterpillars have hung themselves upside down and spun themselves into shiny chrysalis. Now we must wait while the caterpillar radically transforms its body, and eventually emerges as a butterfly. Not only are the children learning from the transformation of the caterpillar into a butterfly but the waiting is yet another opportunity. The children are learning the skill of having patience. Patience teaches children the value of delaying gratification, a skill necessary for maturity. Patience helps develop their ability to think through and resolve problems; it can also counteract impulsivity. The children are also learning resilience, self-containment, and the ability to self-soothe all qualities that are needed for emotional maturity allowing them to succeed later on in school and life. The children seem to be warming up just like the weather. Many of them are full of energy. We have been enjoying our outdoor time where the children have been able to incorporate water into their sand play. In doing this the children are identifying different textures, discriminating between solids and liquids as well as the properties of matter and how things change. All of which are basic building blocks for math. Many of the children have also begun participating in a running game around the yard. Running is a great activity to help kids build endurance. Running offers kids the sense of freedom and the sense of reward and achievement when they finish. When children are physical they are able to sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges. We enjoyed a lovely Shabbat in the classroom all together as well as in the Temple with all of the EC, mothers and grandmothers. During Temple we sang along with Ditza and watched the Rabbis, Cantor Emma and Ditza preform.
