This week we went ladybug crazy! While releasing our butterflies last week the children expressed a desire to learn about ladybugs. Later that week we read “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle. Monday morning we surprised the children by filling our butterfly habitat full of ladybugs. A few of the children were worried that the ladybugs needed their own habitat because the one we had was for the butterflies. Many of the children sat and observed the ladybugs with and without magnifying glasses. They were so excited to share what they were seeing with each other and their teachers. Lucas said "they are so cute". Some of the children requested to hear the story of the Grouchy Ladybug again. We also read through a First Discovery book about Ladybugs. While reading through the discovery book the children obtained new vocabulary words such as antennae’s, feelers, insects, transparent, hibernate and aphids. Valuable math skills such as patterning, counting ladybug spots, legs and wings, size, and weight. The children participated in various art projects throughout the week creating ladybugs with many different mediums. Many of the children took time putting together the Ladybugs Letters activity and the Ladybug Number Counting activity at one of the centers in the classroom.
We enjoyed a lovely Shabbat with Hannah, her family and her grandmother Momma Joon that came all the way from Dallas, Texas. In Temple we enjoyed singing and a story with Ditza and Rabbi Sari. After Temple we took the habitat to our backyar and set the Ladybugs free.
