This week, we talked about the holiday of Shavuot. We discussed Moses, Mt. Sinai, and the Ten Commandments, what they are and what they mean to us today. All week the children have been creating their version of Mt. Sinai. We continued discussions throughout the week with regards to the Ten Commandments in our classroom. Many of the children shared their ideas of how we use some of the commandments such as sharing with their friends, washing their hands before lunch, no hitting or biting, using their words and sitting on the rug. While all together on the rug discussing these classroom commandments the children get a sense of community with each other, enhance their social skills and improve their attention span. The children also made beautiful headbands to wear to Temple during our Shavuot celebration.
We were so excited to come back to class Monday morning to check on the caterpillar’s shiny chrysalis. Unfortunately the caterpillars had not completed their transformations into butterflies. Some of the children expressed their disappointment and frustration. They could not understand why it was taking so long. We reviewed the process caterpillars go through before they turn into butterflies. This was also an opportunity to revisit what it means to have patience. Many of the children realized having patience was like one of the classroom commandments. Tuesday morning the children worked together to create a car track throughout the classroom. While creating the car track the children were learning about the concepts of shapes, location, length and patterns all of which are skills needed for mathematics. The children were also able to express their imaginative ideas and, because each child had their own thoughts on how the track should be, they had to practice their abilities to cooperate, compromise and problem solve with one another. While all this was going on, one of the children noticed there was a butterfly flying in the butterfly habitat. The children were so excited they all came over to look. All of a sudden we noticed a couple of more butterflies. The children could not believe how this was happening right before their eyes. A few of the children decided that they had to sit and watch how the butterflies were getting there. They had decided it was like magic since they were not seeing the butterflies actually come out of the chrysalis. Once all of the butterflies seemed to be flying around in their habitat, a couple of the children cheered. After a few days, the butterflies were ready to be set free. We walked with the friends from room 23 up to the Temple where we let our butterflies go free. The children all waved and said goodbye to the butterflies as they set off into the sky. Friday we enjoyed Shabbat with Jordan and his family. While in Temple we sang songs with Ditza then heard a story told by Rabbi Sari and Rabbi Josh for Shavuot.
