Rain, Rain, go away... Even though we need it very badly. Asher's mom, Tamara, started our week off with chocolate colored chicken eggs that we placed in an incubator. She explained the process to the children as they all looked on in wonder. They kept asking when the chickens were going to hatch. We hope in 21 sleeps to see little chick beaks cracking through the egg shells. The rain on Monday sparked a lot of interest on where rain comes from and why it rains. That is the wonder of an emergent curriculum. After brief outside play time we sat in circle talking about water, where we see water, what rain is made from and why we need it. The children learned a big word "evaporation," and what clouds are made of. The children talked about airplanes flying through clouds and looking for moisture on the windows.
We continued our discussion about Martin Luther King Jr. and finished making our hand puppets. Tuesday, we were supposed to go to the library for our first visit, but sadly it was pouring out at our assigned time. Liora's mom, Tannoz, treated us to one of Liora's favorite books. "Baby Lauren and Theodore", a great introduction to Tu'Bshvet and the importance of taking care of our environment. What a week filled with science. Stuck in our room due to rain gave us lots of time for more structured teaching opportunities. We set up Bingo, we experimented with boiling water and making rain, and some mixing of colors with crayons, (using a primary color and coloring over it with another primary color or white to see what will occur). Wednesday the children were excited to run around outside the fresh crisp air was invigorating for everyone, even the teachers. The children have begun to spell out their friend's names, taking that further we used upper case felt letters and pre-printed name tags to match up the letters in order. We are working on placing the letters from left to right when spelling out names. It is not uncommon for children of this age to write names and words in right to left order. Throughout the week we have also begun to work more on patterning with colors and shapes both on the table and the rug, as well as direction such as front back up down under and behind. Practicing at home and reinforcing directional instructions are important. This will not only aid in math skills but also in following multiple step processes. Rabbi Josh has become a new father to Shifra Gavriel; we wish him lots of Mazel and sweet wishes. This week Teacher Fern became the Rabbi and talked about Martin Luther King Jr. We discussed kindness, love and equality for all. We spoke about lying to friends and family and hurting others by lying. This took us back to the story of Jacob and Esau; and how Jacob hurt his bother by lying. Andrew was a lot of fun, we all sang and danced around the room. Andrew gave us scarfs, shakers and rhythm instruments to experiment with sound movement. Asher is going to be our Shabbat Boy this week, however he and his family were under the weather. Instead we were all Shabbat Boys and Girls. We baked our usual Friday Challah to help us get ready for the smell and warmth of Shabbat.
