Room 12 had a very busy week practicing our categorizing skills. While we were sad we could not go outside the first two days because of the rain, the kids had a great time categorizing in the Cup Game. The Cup Game is filled with hundreds of cups of different colors. The children were put into groups and had to work together to separate the cups by each color. Then, they learned how to stack the cups (the actual purpose of the game). This activity reinforced the skills of critical thinking through grouping, as well as helped the children practice their colors. The stacking portion of the game benefited the children in their gross motor skills. It was tough to figure out how to stack the cups tall without having them fall over. They slowly learned that if you can stack them in a pyramid, the cups will not fall down.
Our Share Day theme this week was to bring your favorite fruit. We saw all different types of fruits such as apples, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, tangerines, mango, and kiwi. We broke each fruit out into categories and counted how many of each were brought to school. The winning group was the apples with 7 apples. We said that the apple group had the most and the cucumber group had the least amount. Then, the children were able to taste each fruit during circle time. They also used many describing words to explain the taste, texture, and appearance of the fruit. Owen said the tangerine was sour and Wynter said it tastes like fruits. Michael compared the mango to the banana and said they were both squishy. Carter loved the apples because they were crunchy. We will continue to use lots of details throughout our daily classroom activities in order to really enhance critical thinking skills. Next week, we will begin discussing Tu B’shevat and incorporate categorizing and details into this holiday. We want to thank the Kahen’s for celebrating Shabbat with our class.
